Xenophobic Misogynist
Liverpool
Genre: Gore-Groove Metal
From the deepest darkest recesses of a tiny venue in Liverpool called Basement 20, eight bands were anxiously awaiting the biggest massacre of Liverpool since the riots! Playing to a select hard-core audience.
The first bit of bad news was that Stuck in a Rut, pulled out 24 hours before the gig, but it worked out quite well as the rest of the bands could play a bit longer and one such artist was Joe Mawdsley who bagged another ten minutes on his set. Lucky us!
On entering I was surprised at how small and cosy the venue was. Nic smiled knowingly and said immediately “I love this venue already!” As the event kicked off I understood what he meant!
First up was one man band Xenophobic Misogynist ‘Joe Mawdsley’ whose awesome ginger dreads could be seen like a beacon in the murky lights of the venue and I am sure quite unintentional resembled a young Mick Hucknall although, thankfully that was where the similarities ended. He looked quite timid not giving eye contact to the crowd, but as soon as the music started up he came to life, with the most, nastiest sickest shit possibly known to man or beast with some extreme passion as he slammed out some intense brutal gore-groove metal.
This one man act is also the amazing drummer of the awesome Dr.Aids who were playing later in the set.
Joe then announced after the first track, that he was in his own words ‘Shitting it!’ although he had no need to... This guy is just like another one man band Sammy Urwin, another amazingly talented artist who goes under the name of Regurgitate Life and not forgetting the amazing Gaz Giles from Hrafnblod too! Check ‘em out if you haven’t already! Not to be missed!
Joe’s extreme opening set got everyone in the mood, the fire was stoked and the battle in the mosh pit was forming nicely!
The intensity of the music and the crushing vocals just lifted the roof and soon there were a few bodies slamming ferociously at the front of the stage.
Surprisingly, the bands were not playing on the original stage they were to the right. Close up and personal with the audience, which was at times very dangerous!
Lee from Ethereal got up and played a track, He only learned it in the sound check, about an hour before but that’s The Sludge, for you, great powerful drummer, can learn anything in minutes and can play whilst being heavily under the influence without losing a beat! Although this time he was quite sober! :O
Absolutely amazing opening set with snorts, squeals, grunts, it was all there. The sound was amazing considering the size of venue. The moshers were an amazing crowd and this paved the way for the next band.

Horsebastard
Liverpool Leeds Wirral
Genre: Grind
Next up were Equestrian badass guys Horsebastard (although there wasn’t a nag in the place! :D ) who is an extreme grinding 4 piece metal band. And if you think they couldn’t get any sicker... think again! Front man Chris just threw himself around into the increasing sweaty pit, fuelled with hate and anger, the passion just soared. More people became entangled in the slamming bodies in the pit, as Chris growled and grunted with extreme ferocity.
Drummer ‘Trippy’ actually lost a drum stick and thankfully it didn’t skewer anyone in the front row! How I don’t know? But it was retrieved and he carried on bashing out the grind.
The mosh pit was now getting very brutal as one guy literally went slamming across the floor and headed towards the bass drum, narrowly missing it by inches (sorry I don’t do metric!)
The intensity grew and carried on growing, as Horsebastard’s short songs kept coming!
But although short and less than sweet, meant more tracks could be played and heard! Now that’s sweet!
What spurred this guy Chris to go into a violent rage as he charged into the audience inciting a pile up in the pit? Answer the grinding intense power that erupted like a volcano onto the open jawed crowd.
Brutal, hard-core, call it what you will but Horsebastard are all that and more! Check them out!

Face of Christ
Chester/West Cheshire
Genre: Metal Punk/Ghetto
The kings of carvery & barbecue have arrived!!! (Their words not mine) If you love food for thought then these are ya guys! Punk with roots of hip hop but certainly NOT rap! But these guys have carved a way into the brutality of their genre without the bullshit!
As the tension had already mounted and surpassed its potential I decided to go and view the band from the back of the room in safety, standing on one of the benches in the hope of getting a better view but despite the tiny room didn’t see an awful lot, apart from body parts and heads, but the music just exploded around me (along with the bodies)
Brings a new meaning to music with a hint of danger! More like music with a lot of danger forget bodies under the patio this was bodies all over the beer stained floor!
The punk influences always present but none the less still as brutal as fuck!
Punk has never been played with so much hate and aggression before!
Some very fast paced shrill guitar (by one of the aforementioned band members below hard to know who’s who here!) just enraged the crowd further, like a melting pot. Lots of heads moving to this and not for the faint of heart!!! Great LIVE band!! Listen and go kill ya granny!

Dr Aids
Liverpool
Fred Westlife Inc.
Genre: Brutal Hard Core Punk Metal
Finally Dr Aids take to the stage. Agz the scary bastard from Hell screams out some brutal toonery. The floorboards now soaked in beer, sweat and (probably blood) bow under the weight of slamming sweaty bodies. Hair flying everywhere, along with limbs!!!!
Two guys from the back of the room picked up some unsuspecting guy and used him as a battering ram to ram the audience... the crowd surged forward into a frenzy and the spillage of mangled tattooed bodies lay at the feet of the mighty scary bastard Agz himself! Awesome!
With the usual banter of obscenities and that was just from the crowd! The band pulverised the basement with their evil lyrics and their own blend of tongue in cheek humour, you couldn’t not love Dr Aids!
With song titles such as *Shit Eating Fuck’ ‘Drive me to Kill you’ ‘Simply Cunt’ and ‘Fallate my Phallus’ what can you expect but dirty brutal bastards that love to growl about shoving things up ya ass or whatever orifice is available at the time!
Gotta love the senseless violence, the noise levels way past 11 and the utter intensity that Dr Aids brought to the set.
Due to a few technical difficulties the set had to be cut a little shorter than planned L but in the time the guys played they stirred the crowd up without the spoon! They didn’t need one!
Magnificent brutal set, great LIVE experience and loads of bodies!!!! Check them out you’ll love them! If not! Die you bastard, and stick it up yer ass!!

Revokation
Leeds
Genre: Death Metal/Black Metal with grind influences
Next up was Death metal band REVOKATION. A four piece band hailing from Leeds. The place now awash with bodies... Yes! I keep saying that word, because it was just that! The sickening brutality just kept flowing without let-up and assaulted everyone like a bag of proverbial spanners in the nuts!
Revokation have been together for just on three years now and had their first release back in 2008 with ‘The Unknown One’
Just before these guys came on stage, me and the other half nipped upstairs for a cig and realized that a full blown storm had brewed. Thunder and lightning, and outside had more water in it than the Mersey!
We braved the storm under a small umbrella (Courtesy of Faye) whilst the lightning played above our heads and the rumbling from the Basement carried on below.
On entering the venue once again realized that crazy guy on the door from Dr Aids, had gone totally whacko with the stamp and so he was stamping everyone’s head as they came through the dimly lit doorway! It felt good to wear the badge of brutality and be part of this event. The crowd had feverishly gathered around the stage in anticipation for what was about to hit them...
A barrage of sound with more nasty vocals than a lunatic asylum burst forth and immediately the crowd started surging back and forth in time to the blasting beats and gut wrenching growls. It was like an exorcism but reversed. The evil demon that was once dormant had now stirred and was infecting the heathen mass of hard-core fans, who in turn responded more vehemently than before.
The deep growls swallowed the crowd in an orgy of gut wrenching putridity!! The crowd loved it! And responded accordingly, by pushing a mangled heap of male sweaty bodies onto the stage. All the faces of the casualties clearly enjoying themselves, and picked themselves up and did it all over again! That’s dedication for you!! Awesome band really enjoyed their set.

Cemtex
Elgin / Lossiemouth / Buckie
Genre: Death Metal / Thrash
The sound of a Scottish lilt meant that Cemtex had hit the stage. A five piece (but formed in 2008 as a three piece) death metal band with their own brand of raucous old school metal, just fuelled the already fuelled audience further as they literally exploded into their set.
The passion was rife as these old school ‘chuggers’ ploughed their way through their most evil sounding tracks. Martin’s vocals were lavish in growls and again a mass of bodies piled up once more. The riffs were outstanding!
I ventured to the side of the stage but already it was getting feverishly dangerous as bodies kept surging forward and circling then got slammed into the disgustingly wet foul smelling soggy floorboards.
The adrenalin was high, the band dealt out lashings of riffs and thrashed out some awesome blast beats, to a more than just head moving crowd.
Great to hear the Scottish lilt again as Martin introduced the next track and went on to incite the crowds further.
Despite the desecration around the mood of the night was an extremely friendly one. Everyone was feeding off the vicious vibes of the music but in a positive way that only good old metal heads would understand. Martin the bands front man said and I quote “Liverpool you have been the best audience of the tour so far!” That said it all...
Great set from the Scottish thrashers and just hope they can get back to the Pool soon for more explosive goings-on! Thanks for the CD’s guys!!!!!

Disentomb
Brisbane, Australia
WEBSTORE: www.disentomb.bigcartel.com
Genre: Brutal Death Metal
DISENTOMB was up next. A four piece brutal death metal band from Australia. Jord the bands throat took the mic and growled out the tracks with no effort, the look on his face, mean and full of hate, as he deliciously purged out the lyrics to a now well over excited sweaty crowd of beer drinking metal heads who just wanted more!
The deepest growls of the night have to go to Disentomb. The floor vibrated with the loudness. The blast beats constantly pounded, the riffs were shrill and inviting, and to say it was an orgy of brutality was just an understatement!
Joe, who incidentally had been moshing from the beginning of the night was now going down for about the fourth time and ended up in the not so good position of being under four rather burly muthas and Sal from Whiplash jumped in to try and pull him free of the carnage as he had passed out for a few minutes.. But Joe (the now dubbed extreme metal mosher) just said... after it was suggested he maybe, goes to the hospital for a check-up said ‘and I quote... But Cerebral Bore is on in a minute I don’t wanna miss them!’ Now that’s fuckin’ dedication. Full respect to Joe Mawdsley... One mental extreme Mosher with no fuckin’ frills! And not forgetting Sal, who braved the fuckers to pull him out!
At one point in the gig Matty Jones dragged Nic off to the mosh pit for a bit of head banging, body slamming shenanigans, to which Nic responded and thrashed away with the rest of them!
It was a great atmosphere all evening. Everyone just lapped up the friendliness in the most extreme way. It was a well-executed evening, well put together with no trouble from anyone. Couldn’t ask more than that!
Check out Disentomb if you like it br00tal, loud and nasty! :D

Cerebral Bore
Glasgow Scotland
Earache Records
Genre: Death Metal
And now the surprise of the evening was when Ian from Entropy said to me ‘This band have a female singer!’ I was amazed to see this tiny gal same height as myself more or less take to the stage and fuck she was amazingly talented to carry off doing vocals like that she must have some powerful lungs! The band played their first show in 2006, and quite a few years later made their debut album in April 2010. Now signed to Earache Records... Hence why the t shirts were 15 quid each L but they are an amazing live experience, and worthy of the money if you have it!
There was no let-up in mangled carcasses as Som (nearly same name as Somi from Mortad! Another brilliant female growler) growled fantastically just as good as the blokes that previously went on stage before her. Pig squealing, grunts, growls, exploding face melting riffs and more blast beats than you can bang your head to... No wonder they are signed! Sadly a few still aren’t, but won’t go into that right now...
Cerebral Bore is nothing like their name. They put you in a headlock and then punched the life out of you with every chord, every growl, every riff, and every beat! Amazing to see live!
Great set!

The end of the night was a real downer. I could have quite happily stayed longer! Awesome night!
Thanks to Faye for taking the post cards for Helrazer and for the loan of the brolly! Nice meeting Andy Deathwave Hughes again, seeing Sal and meeting Matt from Serotonal, Thanks to Ian from Entropy for the lift home. Good meeting new peeps Luis, Agz, Joseph and seeing/meeting some quality bands... Thanks to everyone who made this night what it was - A good old brutal metal knees up, arms in the air, heads down, stick it up ya ass night!
Sorry for lack of set lists... Tough! I ain’t Joe Mawdsley you know! :D
(Just too chaotic on the night to get them)
