Well my Xmas finally took a turn for the better after receiving this little beauty! Something for every mood and every occasion from unusually macabre to thoroughly thought provoking and not to mention exciting!

Alfa Matrix is a Brussels (Belgium) based record company and was born in the summer of 2001. They are the home to such artists as AYRIA, FRONT 242, PSY'AVIAH and AESTHETISCHE among a host of others on this compilation download.

1 PSY'AVIAH – OK

Time simply soars to an expanse of mesmeric soundscapes leaving an imprint of beautiful imagery such a sensual track and a good strong opener for the album.

2 ESSENCE OF MIND - In the Night

Serious and strong again portraying beautiful imagery with blended keyboards rife with perplexing rhythms and inspiring vocal qualities. Subtle beats will just eat you alive.

3 STRAY - Miles from here

A dark encounter with a rich tapestry of sound.  A slow velvety vocal wraps itself around the ears and then suddenly a flurry of rhythm comes to life and engulfs you in a torrent of formidable intensity.

4 DISKONNEKTED - Atlantis (re: discovered)

Now onto a sharp but haunting keyboard rhythm that works into a creative magic of intimidating beats and a soft caressing vocal that sumptuously glides on a bed of robust musical notes.

5 AYRIA - Blue Alice (DEAD WHEN I FOUND HER mix)

Very unusual little track that tells a rather gruesome story with interesting lyrics that keeps you gripped until the end!”  But it has great ambiance attached to it. Watch out you’ll end up like Alice! Make no mistake! Great macabre track! It’s a cross between Alice in Wonderland and the three little pigs I think (!) it is so fucked up it could be anything it likes, but I still love it! – fucked up, warped and a highly addictive track! And up there with Freak Angel as being another favourite.

6 VIRGINS OR PIGEONS – Gotta Get Mad

This is just how it is – it tells it how it is, it is what it is – an awesome track. Intense and honest – it’s what life is all about! The music compliments the ranting’s with the malevolence not far behind as the onslaught continues.

7 SIVA SIX - Faileth Stars

Into its harsh bubbling stride this devours as it rampages, crossing all the boundaries in an epic saga of festering madness. Highly intense and bristling with intrigue.

8 MALAKWA - Monster (KANT KINO mix)

A fantastic little dance track right there that’s bound to make you succumb to its timely rhythms.

9 DUNKELWERK – Kommt (short cut)

Big beats and German lingo it’s what this music was made for. The samples of thought provoking imagery turning darker with every rhythm and encapsulating devious beats. A ripe dance track that has ‘trancy’ encounters.

10 HAUSHETAERE - Hetaere (Exclusive AM version)

Sinister goings on that turn into a monotone female voice surrounded by very unusual quirkiness.

11 AIBOFORCEN - Shadows

This track is somewhat uninspiring, however the rhythm and beats that do play out are quite hypnotic but not a very strong track.

12 32CRASH - The man who came from later

Bubbling rhythmic sways immediately take hold – quite a bold little track with a clean vocal that transports you into the future.

13 HALO IN REVERSE - Into it

Smacking you in the face with an electric rhythm of powerful sleaze – one superb track! Pumped, stoked and full of electric vibes. The most unusual track for this compilation as not an all out electronic track more of a rock track with hints of electronic - but still a superb track and warrants replays by the score!

14 I:SCINTILLA - Swimmers can drown

Feel that rhythm undulating and frenzied – if this don’t get the body moving nothing will! However the female vocal kind of lets it down a bit and makes it mediocre – the music is something else though and quite spectacular. But it is probably a track that on further plays will grow on you.

15 STAR INDUSTRY – Heart Man Angel (single edit)

Typical electronica played at its best – good rhythm and beats come together and leave you refreshed in a swathe of sensational vocal. Hypnotic dark track that’s very catchy too – best played loud for maximum effect!

16 RAZORFADE - Clear Shining (radio edit)

Chewing on the imagination with its clean vocal meandering into a caressing mode of impressive persistence that gravitates to the aural – plenty pleasing.

17 TECHNOIR - Shapes (rough mix)

Rough and ready - superb keyboard and monstrous beats jangle with an even tempo that never lets up through-out the track, trancy, spacy and futuristic!

18 IMPLANT feat. LEATHER STRIP - Lord knows I tried

Good use of samples to some incidental experimental sounds and a harsh slow growling vocal.

19 PLASTIC NOISE EXPERIENCE - PLASTIC NOISE EXPERIENCE -Electronic bodies (long edit)

With shrill electronic noises hardly plastic! This is more like shards of glass that rip through the flesh with an added interesting beat and funky rhythm that prowls with a sneaky compelling conclusion that possesses highly addictive grooves!

20 POUPPEE FABRIKK - POUPPEE FABRIKK Symptoms (disease mix)

Rich in exhausting with sumptuous rhythms that encapsulates and throws you into a myriad of mesmerising listening. Good strong vocal and towering presence that ravishes the senses.

21 ARMAGEDDON DILDOS - ARMAGEDDON DILDOS High

Hues of scintillating rhythms and insatiable vocal done in a clinical monotone style. Thickly persuasive with magical mind bending excellence.

22 DIFFUZION - DIFFUZION - DBD (while u can)

Imposing and dark with plenty of edge.  A whispering female vocal adds intrigue within an ambient encounter of emotion. Quite a distinct track that temps you with its imagery of dark and haunting imagination and catchy rhythms.

23 KANT KINO - KANT KINO - Owner of this house lives here (club mix)

A malevolent and savage attack on the senses with plenty of inspiring moments. Quite a mind altering encounter with severe electronic voice and voluptuous towering rhythms encapsulated in richly tempting beats.

24 FREAKANGEL - My darling bullet

I just love Freak Angel because they truly capture the moment with their harsh excruciating vocal helped along with a female vocal that brings the track to a stupendous climax – surrounded by thunderous beats and mesmerising rhythmic sway that is drenched in an inferno of ample magnitude - this is going to get played a lot and as you have guessed my ultimate favourite on the album.

25 SCHWARZBLUT - Schlusspoetiek

Undulating rhythm packed with powerful emotion intense with a spiteful hate that reaches into the mind and will possess the body. That German vocal wraps itself around the aural and squeezes tightly and unmercifully helped along with a sharp female vocal also sung in German. Another highly invigorating track.

26 KRYSTAL SYSTEM - KRYSTAL SYSTEM - Nuclear winter (North Star side)

Plenty of sumptuous rhythm that provides an emotive wave of bludgeoning beats all ripe for a good workout and will suck you unmercifully into its deep ravenous grooves condemning you to an assault on the senses and leave them tingling!

27 UNTER NULL - Godless (DEDMAN Mix)

A haunting melodic keyboard helped along with a female vocal sounding devoid of human interaction. Innovative, inspiring and very inventive. Particularly the harsh and bruising vocal that accompanies it. Good track!

28 ACYLUM - Your pain v2.0

More scintillating keys ambush the senses. A slow and haunting track that literally explodes into a harsh frenzy of devouring cataclysmic rhythms. Foreboding and dark with plenty of ambiance. Another broodingly good track with plenty going on to feast your ears on.

29 AMGOD - Hospitalism [Jactatio Corporis]

Incidental experimental noises play with your mind and batter the senses with a strenuous onslaught of savagery. An incendiary of primal grooves will leave you needing hospitalisation! The full sound will encompass and enslave you to into its fierce embrace.

30 MENTALLO & THE FIXER - Legion of Leper (re-edit)

A funky beat of rapturous emotive vehemence is before you and there’s no escape from its magical prowess as it charges straight for the jugular, brewing up a storm within a storm of powerful intent to leave you battered and berated by its cruel melodic touches. Superb!

31 NEIKKA RPM - Warped (version 2)

Ravaged by a sweet melodic keyboard and then washed away by a tidal wave of gruelling deep and harsh rhythmic frenzy is the only way I can explain this track. Harsh mesmeric qualities will rip into the aural and feast on your brain cells! Tumultuous and engaging – you will break out into such a hot sweat you will spontaneously combust!

32 KOMOR KOMMANDO - The factory incident (IVARDENSPHERE mix)

The beginning of this track sounds like a monk in a monastery surrounded by a tribal beat and haunting keyboards, incidental noises turning into a deep thunderous beat further on in the track.

33 HELALYN FLOWERS - E-Race Generation (STUDIO-X mix)

I really do adore Helalyn Flowers – all their tracks are exciting and pulsing with energy and hypnotic intent. Superb quirky vocals sung to a very up tempo rhythm and fiery beats that command the body to move.

34 ALIEN VAMPIRES - Won't see ya even in hell

Stunted beats and very little else - that is until slightly further on in the track when all ‘hell’ breaks loose and it swipes you with a sinewy outstretched hand and whacks you over the head, awakening the senses with vigour and savagery, however the beats go on a bit too long to make this 100% enjoyable.

To sum up:

Apart from three tracks that are not as inspiring as most of the tracks contained on the album this really is an immense compilation. Possessing trance flavours, large superior dance beats, clever lyrics, addictive qualities and more sombre beautiful soundscape moments – there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

I have already repeated a lot of the tracks with eager anticipation and couldn’t reach for the replay button fast enough! Especially for Freak Angel and Aryia, Neikka RPM and Helalyn Flowers that are all highly engaging, ravenous and dark.  It is without a doubt a killer album and it is coming straight for you! Brief Info about the E.P

This E.P was originally written with the novels “The Tripods” in mind and contained samples from the TV series, but because Martin could not get the licence for the samples they were removed and the album has now been released based on the notion of ancient aliens being worshiped as Gods in ancient religion and text and in ancient architecture and artefacts.

Biography

Martin Slade the one man band born in 1973 and now signed to Solar Quantum has produced three full length albums and a soon to be released E.P all in one year! Because of his parents, music has always been an important part of his life since he was little, very much inspired by the tastes of his father.

During his childhood he started to listen to artists such as Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin, Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, Pink Floyd etc. Growing up he discovered other musicians like William Orbit and Orbital and their songs contributes to make him passionate about electronic music.

He attended the Community College in Liverpool where he learnt music theory, composition, bass and keyboards after that he studied popular music for three years at The University of Liverpool.  After many years of playing with different bands he decided to start a solo career.

“Ascending” album is inspired by sci-fi movies and games. Tracks like “Ascending” and “Primed Adagio” are a perfect example of that. “Warped” was written as an attempt to create a dance track. “Lilly”, dedicated to the artist’s grandmother, is the only track of the album to include bass, guitar and flute. “Gone too soon” has been written in memory of his nephew, who passed away prematurely. Track “Gaia” has been named after the synthesiser used for the pulse which started the piece. The album “Driven Dreams” is titled for the need to drive ones dreams and never give up. Again like “Ascending” the space and sci-fi fantasy theme is continued especially with tracks such as “Orbit”, “Nebulous”, “Off World” and “Celeste”. “Sefton Park Abstract” was part of a video footage Frithland shot for a University project at Sefton Park in Liverpool. “Water Gate” track was originally wrote for his son in 1996. “Artefact” is dedicated to the writing of Graham Hancock who wrote such books as the Fingerprints of the Gods. Driven Dreams and Ascending reinterpret the sounds of electronic music facets, giving it a modern and experimental feel. The music of Frithland in fact differs from the typical patterns of the genre, and is more akin to that of soundtracks and video games.

“Ascending” and “Driven Dreams” are two wonderful albums that reinvent the sounds of electronic music in a whole new way. Both are now available to buy and on streaming in the best online shops and music websites worldwide.

Stratos

The deep riveting passages simply guide you through into another world as simply as walking through a door – a futuristic view of what is to come. Focused and uplifting and can change your mood in an instant from tears to full on dance moves, however this is a more sombre passage from the E.P

Atmos

This has a more sinister vein running through it. Absorbing and mind bending with plenty of twists and chills and plenty of thought provoking moments in every sense of the word.

Descent

A very hypnotic feel to this track housing a detached and melodic perspective with sumptuous keyboard rhythms.  The chemistry contained within it is a mind spinner and transports you into a superb maelstrom of sound.

Close Encounters

Beats of even tempos and high energy but not in the sense of a danceable track but one of serious focus with inspiring undulating rhythms. As the saying goes “Open your mind your brain won’t fall out!”

 

Ancient Alien

A very ‘spiny’ track that slowly emerges through a diverse spectrum of overall melodic control and highly hypnotic eclipsing the mind with shadows of light fascinating rhythms waft into the air like an expensive perfume with even more lingering effect.

To sum up

This E.P allows you to actually get inside the head of a genius who is literally driven by music of the most electronically intense kind.  Not only has he written a book but also gives bass and guitar lessons – see link above for more details. As well as all that he also designs his own album covers – so clearly this one man has it all sewn up.

The E.P is distinctive and as an art form demands total respect for the mature slabs of very sensuous music which deserves to be played loud through headphones and damn the consequences.

It would be quite interesting to see how these tracks pan out with a vocal attached although that would definitely take away from the seriousness of the music that is cleverly and thought provokingly produced in such a way that a lot of complexity may be lost but the music alone is enough to satisfy the thirst for ambiance with lush melodies and encased in a rhythm that explodes be it on a more serious level than that of mainstream dance tracks, however everything has its place.

Every note has not just been produced but clearly arranged and crafted into a brooding and memorable time piece, maturing elegantly like a fine wine and equally as satisfying!

Biography:

“The Inner Shrine was formed in 1995 in Florence as a project of Luca and Leonardo Moretti Liotti that aggregate around him other musicians who constitute the first line of the band. The Inner Shrine are the first band to use an Italian soprano and combine classical music, progressive and metal together, anticipating the trend of symphonic metal that will see the light until later. In 1996 release Inner Shrine-Promo 1996 demo on cassette originally thought only for labels, with 200 copies.

In 1997 the Inner Shrine signed a contract with the Dragonheart Records of Florence and the same year they released their first album Nocturnal Rhymes Entangled in Silence, the disc is enjoying critical acclaim with rave reviews and reprinting in Cyrillic and Japanese. After a change of formation of the Inner Shrine enters the studio to record their second album Fallen Beauty which will be released in 2000, the work of an innovative artistic impression, recorded in Milan by Maurizio Brioschi.  With "Pulsar" The Inner Shrine inaugurate the contract with Bakerteam Records through an interesting concept on the end of the world, the change and evolution”

Black Universe

Ambiance is the key here backed up by some prowling riffs and stark drumming. As the track furthers it brings with it a sizzling vocal and more special effects than Dr Who! A compelling track it has to be said.

Last Day on Earth

More special effects of a bubbling smoke ridden chasm that really gets you into the track.  That feeling of pure malevolence is prominent. A doom laden feel to it and soft whispered vocal give the feeling of destruction without renewal and makes the hairs on your arms stand on end.

The Rose in Wind

With wind howling and ambiance everywhere stark strings start up and feed your desperate soul. Bringing a lot of imagery to the forefront.

Pulsar

Yet more special effects play out to some atmospheric riffs that really do paint an overall picture of doom. It is saturated in melodic shifts and gripping in its own right.

Peace Denied

Stark and ambient it wearily edges towards a climax of bruising intensity. The blackened breath of the vocals sound strained and full of raw emotion. Definitely no peace to be had here.

Four steps in Grey

Inciting yet more raw emotion this track guides you into a black hole full of intrigue and suspense. A clever spin using electronic sounds to enhance the vocals to a futuristic conclusion. A very compelling heavy track that has gripping qualities.

Immortal Force

Heated and embracing moving faster than the previous tracks with abrasive bite! The scorching riffs and rhythm portrayed here is cataclysmic! Its mesmerising tones are constant and bring the track to life. Superb!

Between

Back to the startling atmospherics, plundering the depths with a magnetic encounter that is shrill and lined with intrigue.

To Sum up:

More like a sound track to an apolcalyptic movie that plays out with a gripping consequence. Track after track the images come alive.  The band is clearly on a mission to take you on a journey to unexplored new heights with this album. For a lot of us science fiction is exciting and Inner Shrine have managed to capture the feeling on this tempestuous journey into the unknown. It is not overly metal – well not as we know it anyway, but it gives a new slant on things and leads us into a realm of beauty with inspiring keyboard and soft meaningful vocals.  But don’t expect to head-bang entirely to this... it does have its metal moments but I feel the band are telling a very sinister story here and want you to be part of it. Very cleverly written and executed with very good formulaic qualities indeed. Love it!

Short Biography:

Gwar is a satirical heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1984. The band is well known for its elaborate science fiction/horror film inspired costumes, obscene lyrics and graphic stage performances, which feature humorous enactments of politically and morally taboo themes.

Despite various explanations that Gwar is an acronym for something, band members have insisted from its inception that the letters do not stand for anything. Indeed, the official website of Slave Pit Inc. indicates that Gwar is a shortened version of "Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh", the name the band used originally when opening up for Death Piggy. Another incorrect view is that the name stands for "God what an awful racket!”

I am beginning to like these guys before even listening! Anything described as an ‘awful racket’ is usually a sign that I am going to like it – in fact the noisier the better for me personally.

Gwar have had nineteen years, worth of music so not surprising that they have accrued no less than 271,057 likes on Facebook and having that good old tongue in cheek that we all know and love is always a win among metal-heads, (although joking aside - in the wake of the Ian Watkins Trial I shall not be reviewing track 7 out of the respect for the babies at the hand of this evil sick individual)

Intro

Not as I had expected, but rather a serious slightly tongue in cheek intro. However it is quite entertaining despite its deathly lyrics and atmospheric vibes!

Madness at the Core of Time

A slurry of madness oozes from the speakers in a frenzy of mish-mashed vocal and crazy rhythmic thrusting. Things just got interesting! Gwar have brought with them a good 80’s feel forward into the 21^st Century! Its music you can definitely bang your head to!

Bloodbath

Still in keeping with its roots Bloodbath is a chant like rhythm which has a tongue in cheek groove that is highly infectious. Plenty of energy and continuous roaring...

Nothing Left

Sounds a lot more serious than the previous tracks, with plenty of anger and aggression that prowls and licks at the ear in a tempting fashion.

They Swallow

Hard and heavy groove that ignites from a dark crescendo of menace. Riffs are passionate and absorbing whilst the keyboard possesses a good haunting rhythm that adds a nice intense touch!

Torture

Good strong stalking rhythm with plenty of pent up emotion – everything so far is most definitely to the maximus, and holds even more antagonistic qualities.

Raped at Birth

I, Bonesnapper

Inflaming the passions further this track roars into life with thunderous chugs and thick embracing rhythms with a highly charged invigorating vocal.

Mr Perfect

Sending goosebumps down the spine with chilling sound effects and an intriguing guitar riff – this beast has been unleashed and it will taunt you till the death with a sonic intervention.

Battle Maximus

Title track to the album and containing heavier than a truck load of scrap metal its beastly strings engage from the start. Persuasive and unyielding, leaving a lasting impression.

Triumph of the Pig Children

Mesmerising riffs and another chant like vocal edge comes into play on this track sparking a journey back into the time when metal was happily brooding with tongue in cheek intent! Good pig snorts at the end though, never heard them in the 80’s! Great track!

Falling

Shrill ambient guitar creates an overwhelming ravenous backdrop for the album. Honest and raw with a swagger of rhythm you simply can’t ignore! Vocally sounds like a bunch of pirates on a drunken binge!

Fly Now

Heavily drenched with a fiery passionate groove that brings with it an assault of intensity with that very un-serious tongue in cheek misdemeanour.

To Sum up:

I love the way the band have incorporated the heavy with cheeky! What can I say? It works! Sort of Spinal Tapesque qualities, bringing back the 80’s but on 21^st century terms.  It is quite a clever take on metal with excellent guitar that houses just as good melting riffs and that alone should make you smile, but Gwar has taken it one step further by adding their own stamp – love it! Gwaaarrrgghhlllgh!!!!!!!!
