“Skreamer have rapidly emerged on the London scene in the world of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal originating from Barnet, London. Skreamer started in late 2009 after meeting at the British Academy of New Music. Their main influences are bands like Machine Head, Trivium, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold and many others from a wide range of different genres which also includes classical – who’d of thought it!!

They spend most days rehearsing and writing just trying to push their craft to new levels, always searching for the perfect sound for them. 

Everyone in the band is just 19 and take their music extremely seriously even at that young age. Individually these four guys are all great musicians with an almost unbelievable knack of understanding sounds at a very early stage. With ear melting vocals, spine tingling guitar riffs, pounding bass and drumming techniques and a lead guitarist that has been classed as a virtuoso and can give any of the greats a run for their money!

These guys practise 7 hours a day, every day and always deliver a tight, show stopping performance – they will have everyone on their feet, moshing and just having a great time. I 100% guarantee if they play your venue you’ll have a great night”

After reading their comprehensive biography I realised that they are all just 19 years of age, shock, gasp, horror! I had no idea! as they all come across really mature and most definitely serious about their music.

Their album cover is just as vibrant as the music itself and has great use of colour making it eye catching and indeed it stands out.

I must admit though I really don’t like MP3 downloads as I can never find what I am looking for on my computer so still plumb for a no nonsense CD with all the info inside, but then again I am old school – but something more personal with a CD for me anyhow plus you can’t sign a download so they are not as personal and if your computer goes tits-up... say no more! 

However it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the fine art of Skreamer – enjoy!

Victim (Explicit)

Love the beginning on this track it powers up so viciously with rhythms aplenty and catchy ones at that! No doubt a few cracked craniums will be had to this track alone! Vocally superb! Scornful and evil with great bass hooks, scrumptious guitar riffs magnificent drum beats, and compelling breakdowns – it has everything!

S.M.I.L.E

A nice chug brings this track to life. It is heavy and raucous with frenzied finger work on the frets, and powerful drumming. It has its slower moments both musically and vocally but all in keeping with the track and it possesses great rhythms.

Nothing (Explicit)

Superb bass hooks open this track and then a frenzy of drum beats take over, with scathing vocals to a chug like effect – the onslaught continues to fever pitch – the track also has head wreaking qualities and the harmonies are superb between Sergio and Samuel.

Opiate
This track is completely different to the previous three with a haunting female vocal from Anna Ray – it is dream like quality is rich in beautiful chords and drum beats and is really an interesting track. As mentioned a few times in previous reviews I am not a lover of female vocals a lot of the time but Anna’s are exceptional on this track and she deserves credit for it. However there are juicy male face-ripping vocals too and together it does make for some great listening.

Flesh & Blood

Another stomping “chugger” comes into life with feverish riffs which no doubt will draw blood to the surface of Sam’s fingers and really damming drum beats from Bobby. It is a slower composition but still intense and enjoyable despite being 6 minutes and 21 seconds long – time flies when listening to this track.

Straight to Hell

A superb array of riffs beats and rhythms with an awesome vocal roaaaaaaaaaaaar thrown into the mix – astoundingly superb with loads of demonic, savagery – even Satan would be cracking his skull to this! Brilliant to the last note!

Bad Trip (Explicit)

The rhythms are outstanding on this track along with some crazed vocals and drumming, it is fast, furious and fiendishly awe inspiring! Get wind-milling! The vocals turn into a whisper and then build to demonic proportions – Loving this track and feel compelled to see if I can get my unruly hair to rotate in time to those luscious beats! Sadly only last 2 minutes and 21 seconds but what a track!

Time

Ambient and dark with sparse drumming and classical guitar show casing the bands diversity with more controlled clean vocal. This gives us respite from the skull crushing previously done. A beautiful track that is spine tingling in all its glory – “Time” to get the lighters out and sway to the complexities this track brings. Truly outstanding!

Blackened Earth

Now for the title track which is a conglomerate of sparse drumming and plucking of strings that start to build into more creative artistry from the band. Slow in tempo and rhythm until... yes you have guessed it more “chuggingly” fast and vehement goings on. Vocally face melting and after all the previous wind-milling, and head-banging no doubt will cause severe and fatal broken necks!

To sum up:

A truly amazing listen, with so much diversity with beautiful classical guitar moments, to scathing rhythms and compelling beats – it keeps you gripped all the way through till the end.

I have quite a few favourite tracks on this album but Opiate is an enthralling listen. It is clear to hear that these guys practise none stop to create such compelling music and as a listener an honour and privilege to experience.

I really cannot fault this album – it reaches right where it should, it gets into your head and sweeps you along into a musical void of mixed feelings from aggressive to dream-like with so much more in between. I have to see Skreamer live at some point as I feel there is now a large gap in my life and most of the shows they have played have been to sell out gigs.

If you haven’t purchased this album yet I strongly urge you to do so, because it really is outstanding quality. The band has excelled through-out this musical extravaganza so go and crack your craniums and enjoy it to the full. This is serious listening!

Genre: Aggressive Groove Metal with Thrash Elements

“Piranah is a "blue collar", no frills, in your face metal band. Make no mistake; Piranah is a force to be reckoned with! and shared a stage with bands such as Soil, Overkill, F5 (David Ellefson), Warbringer, Doro, Sacred Reich, Paul Di’Anno (Iron Maiden), Joey Belladonna (Anthrax) and Stuck Mojo.

Piranah was nominated for best metal band & best percussion in 2007, 2008 (won for best percussion) and 2010 at Nashville’s FM rock station 102.9 The Buzz (WBUZ). The band was also nominated in 2010 & recently in 2011 (winner) for best hard rock/metal band at the N.I.M.A. (Nashville Independent Music Awards). Piranah were the 12th most requested band in 2008 and 10th in 2010 out of over 400+ bands in the Middle Tennessee area. The Growing Pain

This is fast, furious and groove laden with plenty to shake your head to. Great gritty vocal and solid riffage with hard bass hooks and precision drum beats all playing a part in creating a superb catchy rhythmic track, with superb breakdowns – if this does not get you going nothing will!

Face the Day

Thrash-tastic! Although the la la la vocals at the beginning and throughout the track just don’t seem to fit! However the rhythms are hard and heavy and I particularly love the drumming on this track and the solid fret work of a metal guitar – tremendous listening, but please forget the la la la’s as it grates somewhat otherwise a superb track!

Solid Ground

Another thrashing track, with an amazing scream at the start although it loses a bit of momentum, further on in the track and sounds rather jumbled. The vocals sound slightly off in places but the guitar makes up for this, so good and bad points with this track.

Awaken the Dream

With a crashing of thunder a rather bluesy guitar starts up and a dreamy vocal quality emerges as the track builds it gathers in energy and becomes a very intense and rhythmic listen with good strong harmonies and very diverse from the previous tracks and still possesses that hard groove laden edge.

Crashing Down

A real "stomper" of a track and the title track too! – solid and uncompromising beats power up from the speakers with again, good harmonies and concrete drumming. The bass sneaks in on the track to give it that extra oomph and altogether adds great head banging qualities.

Drug Wars

Uncompromising drum beats flood this track with tremendous power, and the guitar adds that highly pleasurable chug that is very familiar to a metal head and in keeping with the thrash element with copious amounts of amazing aggressive grooves contained within it. The guitar is just alive and with so much going in this track I may have to play it again! Superb!

My World

Sparse drum beat and distorted guitar begins and then the gritty vocal starts up but rather disappointing this track as again it sounds jumbled but its plus points again are the drumming which redeems it somewhat and not forgetting the guitar which is used to its capacity here so perhaps not as bad as I had mentioned above – it may grow on me!

Criminal Mix

Not really enjoying this track as it tends to lose its way a tad, with varying rhythms that just do not seem to reach their potential. It does hold a good groove however but that’s about it!

Snake Crawl

Great rhythms on this track and again a very intense listen to be had here, with distorted guitar and damming drum beat. Vocally superb as well offering great harmonies – Liking this track a lot and will be pressing the repeat button – no doubt!

Melt

Hard and heavy rhythms with great bass hooks, and uncompromising guitar – Vocally it has a definite rock feel about it. Vibrant and steadfast in offering great head banging qualities.

To sum up:

There’s a lot more tracks I like than don’t on this album. Although I am guessing that Piranah are more a live experience rather than just listening to tracks on line as sometimes this does not do the band justice at all and you need to sometimes experience a band live, to outline just what they are offering musically and I think Piranah fall into this category.

The drumming and guitar work are faultless this comes across by just listening, and although I like the gritty hard edged vocals there are some flaws in that they sounded slightly off key on Solid Ground, but never having experienced the band live (and probably not much chance of that me being in the UK unless the band tour) I will have to say I am divided but overall a great listenable album that is powerful and one I will be playing again as I feel they haven’t yet reached their potential fully. But no doubt they have the potential to go further and I am sure they will!

Genius at work! Gareth Giles

The 9^th February was indeed a very sad day for all Hrafnblóð fans everywhere as Gareth Giles pulled the veil over his work for the final time leaving behind a trail of the most beautiful, thought provoking and inspiring music ever written. His music is a huge loss to the music scene.

I was so happy when he signed to Wodfreca Records

http://wodfreca.bandcamp.com/ and thought this would push Hrafnblóð to the far reaches of the globe, but sadly this was not to be but glad there is a small spark of hope that one day Hrafnblóð will be back stronger than ever before. I for one live in hope of that day!

I will always be happy to support Gareth in whatever he decides to do – and at the moment it is writing poetry among other things and will no doubt be just as thought provoking as his music.

A snippet of Gareth's literary work!

This hand crafted piece of history shows on the cover a simple black and white photograph of a wood – the true heart of nature, whilst the disc itself depicts an overhead view of a city with a river running through it and is a hand made release.

It really is with a heavy heart that I sit here and try and put into words one intelligent man’s creative art for the last time.  It is unbearable to do knowing it is the last piece of Hrafnblóð but I owe it to Gareth and Hrafnblóð as the last few years have indeed enlightened my dark path and brought some amazing creative work to the forefront of the metal underground scene.

Gareth started Hrafnblóð (translated as Raven’s Blood) single handed in 2010 and touched on lyrical themes such as Anti-Government, Odinism, Anti-Judea-Christianism, Revolution, Anti-Zionism, Nature and Darkness. His music has sold out on many occasions but due to Gareth not enjoying his art any longer he has decided to quit and move on to pastures new. 

Lif & Lifprasir

An ocean of superb guitar, drums and keyboards come surging into life as this awesome piece of music starts amid a scornful vocal and is in true Hrafnblóð style. Gareth does not do anything in half measures.  The choral choir summons up the darkest of hearts and brings them into a new and meaningful phase of peace and enlightenment. Its delicate tones are so pleasurable to sit and wrap yourself into and offer astounding satisfaction.

Descent of the Black Fog

Superb guitars on this track mould into the timeless, extravagant and colossal array of musical notes ever made to man. It brings you to your barest roots and gives an insight into this incredible man’s talents. I particularly love Gareth’s vocals that are so evil, black and raw in the purest forms and are truly breath-taking on this creative track with clever use of echoes as the track fades out.

Fires of Dresden

A naturalistic track with birds singing and then a sampled voice begins amid distant rumblings of a plane with a loud siren – not as pleasant as you would first think as we all know what happened at Dresden. Gareth captures the scenes in this prolific track with inexhaustible low tuned and heavy guitar work with droning type of drum beats in copious form giving a harmonious melodic twist.

Englalande

Haunting and creative this track starts slow and wondrous with beautiful melody which then turns blacker and that sumptuous vocal begins. Returning once more to the harmonious glow of simple guitar strings and solid drum beats with an abundance of melodic plodding that sweeps you into the Hrafnblóð world of Heathen Metal in its most purest of forms.

To sum up:

This is stupendous creative work from just one man who created and crafted such fertile music in the name of Hrafnblóð.

It is a genius at work no other word could describe Gareth Giles – as this music really gets into the heart of the matter and could no doubt bring him the fruits of his labours if he pursued it. Hopefully he will decide to pick up where he left off and make a lot of people very happy.

I will be keeping a close eye on the Hrafnblóð page for any updates although as Gareth mentioned in his note above it won’t be this year, but hopefully he will gather his thoughts and decide to re-alight the spark he created back in 2010 and make a comeback album in 2014 – I am ever hopeful – I praise Odin he will!

“Grimlord "Cruel Ruler" is a Polish group from Wroclaw. Their music is a big dose of energy, emotional and melodies. Based on the sound of electric guitar and an excellent rhythm section and is characterised by dynamic compositions with catchy riffs and interesting lyrics in which the team usually refers to historical events. “Hell & Roll!”

This is metal played with classical over tones.  It’s heavy, melodic and yet brutal in its own way with hard edged savage fretwork and powerful drumming not to mention the very influential raucous vocal content that is not guttural as more growled out in places but not all the way, which is somewhat disappointing and not in keeping with the genres at all. However, this could be the bands intention but at this stage none too sure!

There is some beautiful acoustic guitar on Prolegomena. A Polish band that plays Spanish guitar, growls out lyrics and well the surprises are endless and it shows for sure that the band are as diverse as their language but it is very hard to know where Grimlord has taken its influences from as I really haven’t come across anything quite as random and chaotic before.

The band’s name suggests to me: Black Metal, the Spanish guitar style suggests classical, the electric guitar suggests rock, the drumming progressive metal and the vocals leaning towards death metal in places although not as guttural, it’s a real chaotic mix and maybe the band are influenced by all of the above but it is certainly not what it says on the label.

King is Dead is not one of my favourite tracks for the simple reason the vocals at the beginning sound comical and I should imagine it would be difficult to play this track at a live gig – well in the UK anyway, without the audience losing interest, however the track possesses some excellent drumming but then it trails off into oblivion.

Although it has an interesting title “Dead bodies don’t swim!” the track itself is somewhat muddled, or at least sounds it - in the fact that awful vocal starts up again but thankfully stops just as quickly as it started.

The Spanish influence is present at the start of the next track with some amazing drum beats but is again somewhat confusing as it builds to a mighty crescendo which is reminiscent of power metal to a degree.

It is very difficult to know what you are listening to here and it is like the band can’t make up their mind what they want to play so just put rock/metal on their info page on Facebook as a genre to cover everything although on their Myspace page it says the band are Progressive/Thrash/Metal and sadly I am finding it difficult to actually listen to the tracks all the way through to the end.

Widerstand 17 starts off with some beautiful acoustic strings but then turns into another jumbled and befuddled mess.

*The film is about the Germans in Poland and no doubt will be grim watching as all the films of this ilk are and that is probably where the term Cruel Ruler (as described in the top section of this review) comes from - but other than that I cannot comment any further without watching it to the very end.

To sum up:

A very perplexing listen! No doubt the guys can play their instruments but it would help immensely if they knew what genre they were playing but sadly this does not seem to be the case here. Although it is a very diverse album it is one that will not be getting repeated any time soon. Definitely not my taste in music but no doubt someone out there will love it for its diversity!

Formed June 2012 Haut et Court translated means “High and Short” so that answers the first question and secondly, Math core, also known as math metal, is a rhythmically complex and dissonant style of metal core. It has its roots in bands such as Converge, Botch, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. The term math core is suggested by analogy with math rock. Both math rock and math core make use of unusual time signatures. Math rock groups such as Slint, Don Caballero, Shellac, and Drive like Jehu, have some influence on math core, though math core is more closely related to metal core. Prominent math core groups have been associated with grind core, so I hope that clears up any confusion! (Slightly)

Very little is known about Haut Et Court and the band members seem to want to remain anonymous for some reason known only to them. So as a result I can only review the music that is now listed.

The faceless Haut et Court

Reviewing a varying number of genres really opens your eyes as to what is “out there” and until this very day have never in my life heard of Math core! Maths was not one of my brilliant subjects at school – nor out of school, suffering from what is known as Dysalculia which was never diagnosed until about six years ago, but as I don’t have to use figures – I am particularly interested.

I do however enjoy a nice bit of brutal music and enjoy the complexities this kind of genre brings to the now very large table of ever expanding sub genres of metal.

Whoa and this is something all its own with experimental passages and grinding with growled guttural vocals. The drumming is somewhat animalistic and feverishly played to yes some very complex rhythms and in true grind style lasts all but a few minutes long but some tracks last a little longer than others.

Its great music to freak out to and I bet Haut et Court are good strong portrayers on the live circuit – although sadly I am not going to get any chance to see them play live any time soon living in the UK! Unless I win the lottery!

The images of a savage mosh pit and loads of stage diving springs to mind here with complex crossover rhythms and pounding savagery on the kit although saying this some of their breakdowns can be quite slow and experimental in delivery but good to know it does not last long before the immense and intense auditory onslaught continues, which is good for all you grind fanatics out there – me included!

The brutality continues on every track with mesmerising quality. The abrasive rhythms and beats and the accompanying noises keep coming at you at a terrifying pace with its boot firmly planted into the groin area and never lets up for a second. Frenzied and complex just as its genre suggests this is one brute of an album.

This erupting, at times fast paced other times experimentally savage album will satisfy the largest of appetites providing they like the gurgling growls and complicated rhythms – this is definitely growing on me and must go and check out other math core bands. But Haut et Court is simply biting, raucous and extreme and a great listen to boot!

Now if they used math core to explain the times tables, geometry, and logarithms I may have stood a chance at understanding maths logic... well maybe!

Genre: Classic Heavy Rock with modern twist

“Shoctopus are one of the hardest working rock bands in Ireland and will be releasing their debut album, Brand New Kind Of Madness, on March 28th at the Button Factory. The album, a thirteen track powerhouse of rock, have been two years in the making, and will initially be released as a limited edition double disc set, with a bonus DVD featuring the video for the smash hit Too Much Is Never Enough, along with three unplugged tracks, four remixes and extras.

 The Shoctologo!

The band have successfully released an earlier E.P King of The Mountain, produced by Sean Genockey (Manic Street Preachers and Suede), and have raised the bar for themselves with their debut album. The album ranges from the three minute radio hit Too Much Is Never Enough to the epic fourteen minute Trail Of Tears, and includes songs that range from crowd pleasing live stompers, such as the track Stomper, to intense and personal songs like Soul Woman”

Well after clicking on the link to the new single from Shoctopus I was cringing at the very tongue in cheek video of geeky girl reading a Shoctoboy comic and getting kidnapped by the members of the band, being duct taped to a chair and having her glasses removed whilst the guys all wind-milled and played their new single “Too much is never enough!” in front of her, needless to say she breaks free but not after doing a “Mr. Benn change of clothes (as well as hair and make-up) and has a good old head bang before pushing one of the the guys away and leaving the building only to hand her copy of the comic to yet another geeky girl and yes you know what’s coming! So that is how they are recruiting their Shoctoposse!!

Fun and merriment will be had by all at the Shocto-launch!

What got me more than anything was: Why the band had to kidnap anyone to listen to their new single? And also if it was that much of a shock to the girl why did it look like she was so eager to get inside that car?

Well... I have to say if it happened to me I would not be as eager to get into a vehicle and would be doing everything I could to fight off the guys... wait a minute... although their hair might persuade me   :D Too much hair is never enough! (Oh shut up Pagan!)

Don't read this comic ladies!!

Saying this I do love the single because it is catchy and memorable and definitely worth a listen. Good old rock n roll and that’s not a bad thing!

Love the guitar on this single it’s just superb! Expressive, and emotionally charged even though a bit tongue in cheek the guys have definitely got something with maximum impact here as only a few hours after listening I was humming this song and thought wtf am I humming and yeah you guessed it “Too much is never enough!” So they may not have kidnapped me by car but they have certainly kidnapped my brain... Does this mean I am now part of the Shoctoposse?
