Biography:

“HELLFIRE was formed in late 2014 in Kremenchug, Ukraine. The band was created by Karagh (Guitar/Vocals) and Necrobafomet (Bass), former members of the black metal band Paranomia. Later, they were joined by drummer Skullcrusher and second guitarist Max, together they began rehearsing and writing original materials. Initially, it was decided to make black metal music with the influences from old-school thrash and death metal. October 31, 2015, the first live performance of the group took place. Shortly before this, guitarist Max left the band, and since then HELLFIRE continues to work as a trio format. Next, live performances took place in different cities of Ukraine and the response was always very positive from the audiences.

The recording of their debut release "Goat Revenge" was completed at the end of 2016 and later released on 31st July through German label Witches Brew.  The Album consists of a haunting intro leads into 7 great songs, crafted into a fine dark brew of genuine Black Metal mixed with crushing Death Metal! An erudite listener will eventually find a lot of first waves black metal and speed metal influences on these tracks. These goat lords will appease all who crave heavy riffs, blasphemous vocals and attention to keeping the Heavy Metal in Black Metal, something is sadly forgotten by a lot of today’s Black Metal bands.  When it comes to comparison, Bestial Mockery and Impiety eventually come to mind. The vocal brings back the ravaging grim voice of Nocturno Culto, at the same time he delivers some gruesome death growls!”

When you think of Black Metal your mind is usually drawn to the symphonic embellished kind, not the sort where the music is remotely melodic but here Hellfire has managed to incorporate a solid sound with just that a melodic core. The Intro is just that but moving on to Hellmass Attack you can hear the black influences but also the death metal too and this has outstanding qualities. Goat Revenge hosts unusual time signatures and dark ambient tempos that will curdle milk. The vocals are definitely demonically crude, but the rhythms are indeed ready to form a mosh pit being loud, fast and savage. War Apocalypse Battery the sound of marching feet take charge until a compelling rhythm ascends on the audial devices and brutalises them with a persistent eagerness and passionate energy. Field of Screams is just a complete battering ram that charges at the senses and leaves one feeling totally bewildered as the rhythms rage frantically, there is no stopping the band on this track with their melodically charged offering and deep roaring growls. Unholy Cult this title made me chuckle somewhat, but that’s another story! The track itself broods under spiced grooves and a dark ambient charm and steps up to grab the attention. Unleash the Beast being the longest track on the album at four minutes thirty-nine seconds definitely unleashes a beast, as its lustful appetite spawns evil but haunting hooks and provides a platform from which the band can shout or should I say roar from. The track isn’t shy to pull out all the stops and delivers some fierce complex beats and rhythms that you can head bang to. Lord of the Mighty Horns I think should be re-title Lord of the mighty roar. Vocally and musically Hellfire are just feisty and predatory. They know just how much evil to inject and for a debut album definitely wins a thumbs up, being enjoyable and loaded with intrigue!

Another Black/Death metal band from the UK that throws a curve ball and sound undeniably fuelled, hot and ready to go, with the most awesome vocal screech and deathly roar possible. I can see why Spinefarm wanted them in the fold for sure.

Reawakening with the tension soaring it’s hardly surprising that this track creates angst and fear among its listeners. It’s a very profound and atmospheric track that indulges you in the dark arts if only for a brief while, and a superb starting point for the band’s new album.

Our Way comes straight in after the previous track and launches its sadistic groove right your face! The vocal ranges in antagonistic fashion and gives the ears something to home in on, along with the chunky rhythms that make this track sound totally deranged and unhinged.

Scaling the Gods has a certain swanky drama attached to it and sounds way too much ‘unlike’ black metal as it claims but no complaints here at all. That groove is unmistakably superb and gives the band a point on which to focus its unique blend of death/black metal. For a truly amazing encounter this track is just nail-bitingly raw – so much so you will be down to the quick in no time!

Unearth bears down on the audial like a serial killer abuses their victim. Once their rhythms seed in your mind they are not going anywhere but will continue to grow and flourish long after the track finishes.

Carnal really reaches for the throat and keeps its grip focused throughout its four minute and five-second adventure. The grooves not far behind along with that demonic lush vocal – let it haunt you forever!

Foreign Skies takes on another twist and produces a very different sound and slows things down to a more mean able pace, although it was just tricking me into thinking I knew which way it was heading and has now turned dark but then returns to its original form and then twists back into a raging bull mode.

Grasping the Torch again with monstrous vocal and slabs of infecting groove it makes its way homeward bound but on the way takes everything out in its wake. It’s striking and so ridiculously enjoyable, I would even go as far to say compelling!

The Great Curve the thuds of the bass drum along with bass guitar and highly seasoned riffs take this track to another level, but not going to complain if it comes back to me like a boomerang! Great listening!

To the Cold sneaking out a very atmospheric track complete with background riffs and footsteps it leads the way for confidence and boldly strikes with a mighty blow to the skull vocally as the range reverts from high to low in an instant.

This is one very enjoyable and compelling album that keeps you gripped from the beginning of its tirade. Infused with more rhythm than these guys have hair on their heads – if that is possible!! Definitely recommended – Spinefarm/Candlelight have got it sussed just like Ancient Ascendants… Do you?

Biography:

“SONS OV OMEGA were formed in Umeå, Sweden, in 2012 by Tiamat Invictuz and Arktos. They were soon joined by Mors on lead guitar. Originally Tiamat Invictuz held the role as bass player, but the lack of a rhythm guitarist resulted in Tiamat Invictuz taking up the role. At the same time, Anthropos joined with the role of vocalist. This was the start of the creative process.

With the vast difference in musical influence, the band spent most of their time trying to find a common ground, a structure of the band and a shared vision in music, lyrics, themes and future. The following years were spent refining the sound. Mors and Tiamat Invictuz wrote tracks upon tracks, while Tiamat Invictuz and Anthropos collaborated to find a cohesive lyrical theme to represent the band. Their shared fascination with death and annihilation turned their eyes to the mythologies, tales and deities of the apocalypse.

And in 2015, when Sons Ov Omega finally was ready to enter the studio, they choose to record a full-length album with the tracks that had survived throughout the years. It resulted in the debut album "Reign". The album showcases a sonic template whose genre can be very hard to pinpoint, bringing to mind the classic works of Edge of Sanity, Enslaved and even Opeth. In 2016 Sons Ov Omega signed with Black Lion Records. "Reign" was released on February 18th, 2017 at a live concert in Umeå, Sweden, with fellow label mates Defiatory and Wormlight who played as the supporting acts!”

There’s one thing that can be said for Black metal bands and that is they go out of their way to look the part as well as sound the part. They wear extreme make-up and adopt strange demonic names as well as sometimes dressing for the part when on stage and Sons Ov Omega definitely fall into that category, and which there is no exception to the rule.

Judging from the first track Pandora the band have harnessed in on ambience and made great use of their melodic core, drawing it into the track with perfection. The dark and subtle tones are reminiscent of the dark arts, sounding very robust and deep veined. Fields of Vermin enslaves the erupting presence into its line of fire and toys with the mind as its thick slabs of blackness ebbs and flows with sheer intensity. The vocals sounding harsh and deviant just make the track a dark delight! Quetzalcoatl is the official single taken from their album and is outstanding! Stalking the senses and making them pay for any deviance it keeps you focused while sending shivers down your spine, despite the melodic rancour that emanates from it. Nuclear Salvation is a sweeping and vibrant energetic agitation that shows its angry side almost from the off. The harsher attributes belong to the vocalist Anthopos, whose dulcet tones show a fantastic range. Malleus Maleficarum although from the title you can guess it isn’t anything good but malignant or bad, but that cannot be said for the actual track just the title. It is a track that is invasively dark and brooding, raging with emotion and devious intentions. Kali is a gentle tempered track with beautiful stringed arrangement although there are underlying warnings throughout the track as it builds momentum and comes straight for the jugular. The vocals are so deep it makes my stomach hurt as I feel I cannot breathe properly, so it already has that ‘up close and personal’ attribute, but it makes me uncomfortable to listen to vocals sung so low. Brainwave Zero knocks out some superb riffs that come together with a mighty scream as it bubbles over the surface and fires its combined feistiness into an atmospheric indulgence. The Tempest hosts a gallant riffage that shadows all the previous tracks and is an all-powerful rampage of magnificence. The rhythmic tension is indeed intense and superbly executed. Loving this to death! Deluge offers a sparse stringed accompaniment to some cymbal activity, with a deep monotone vocal, that suddenly explodes with all the blood and guts as it can muster. Dreams of a Sunken City (Intro) gets off to a terrifying start as its eeriness swallows you whole. The creaks and moans uncontrollably, as the atmospheric hues are in abundance and creep about inside the speakers – a malevolent force is definitely at work here, it doesn’t get any darker or bleaker than this, and yet if fascinates me to the very core of my being. Tremendous track! Cthulhu rewards us with sharp riffs and spawned vocal slurry straight from the depths of hell and beyond. However, there is always a superb melodic vein pressed deep inside the tracks that make them interesting and captivating.

This is one album every black metal enthusiast will devour with newly sharpened teeth. It’s deceptively intriguing – once you are there there’s no going back, it has you in its grip and it isn’t going to let you go anytime soon. Superb Listening!!

“Formed in 1994 Preston Thrash Metallers Solitary are possibly the best-kept secret in Metal. Having released three albums through Copro Records their brand of modern Thrash Metal has gained them a loyal fan base on the UK’s underground scene, shows with Xentrix, Lawnmower Deth, Hirax, Re-Animator, Toranaga, D.A.M and Cerebral Fix. Proved they are more than a match for their 80’s counterparts.

Their 1998 debut release “Nothing Changes” was revered by many in the press stating that “It was as good as anything the Yanks could offer” and contained “Some of the best metal of the Nineties”. Solitary subsequently struck a deal with Copro Records which saw a reissue of “Nothing Changes” in 2004 followed up by “Requiem” in 2008 which displayed a much darker and sinister side of the band. In 2014 the live album “I Promise to Thrash Forever” was released to mark the band’s 20th anniversary which was funded in 21 days by a Pledge Music Campaign, Terrorizer streamed the whole album on their website and included a track on their covermount CD for the third time in their career!”

I can now understand the words written in the band’s biography about ‘Solitary’ being the best-kept secret, but what I don’t understand is WHY?

This is really top notch thrash through and through and not only that but this is an outstanding album that goes a long way to satisfy the appetite. The rhythmic forces take you on a journey to paradise, while the intensity flows through its fierce veins and seduces the mind and body.

The first track Blackened Skies is a testimony to the band’s professional production and execution. It’s fast paced and edgy, to the point of no return and once this gets under the skin it infects with a powerful addiction. Wait is an abrasive smack in the mouth and then some. Trigger Point Atrocity devours the ears with such ferocity making it almost a pleasant experience, I say almost but this is thrash so it shouldn’t have its reputation ruined by one word. Anthem of Regret wastes no time getting down and dirty with its potent rhythms that fire on full cylinders. The music is powerful and forthright and brings in some fantastic riffs that indulge in every aspect of the musical scale. Architects of Shame more or less chants its way through the track in a fiery mist of haze that sweeps you off your feet with choppy tenacity and quick fire heaviness. The Diseased Heart of Society is the band's title track and holds a certain dark and scowling tone that chills to the bones. The pummelling drums are constantly nagging while the riffs are chilling. Unidentified is another quick fire assassin and gets down to business chewing the audial canal in an expressive and impressive aggression. It is one of the best tracks on the album although, it can be said, they are all pretty impressive, but favourites are bound to be had on this album. The Words Define gives itself a jump start and then heads off into the distance in a haze of smoke. The vocal content growls furiously surrounded by a really satisfying thrash rhythm full of spirit and agitation and not forgetting that superb melodic core that stands out for its moreish content. The Edge of Violence if you can headbang to this then you must have a flexible neck is all I can say. This track will indeed snap your neck it is so fast paced with boisterous aggression. Humanity’s Decline the final track on the album does not let the band down at all. With great vocal endeavour, sparking a flavoursome groove and putting the millage in until the end.

This is one album that goes all out to impress without really trying. The talent is just naturally created by this quartet of thrashers that are now well established after 23 years on the scene and no surprise they have their genre well and truly sorted! However, their music is distinct and compelling with rousing and irresistible vocals that lead toward lingering attention, so for all thrash fans everywhere – not long to wait for this little beauty to be uncaged!

“Raised from the ashes of the pioneer Canadian black metal band SLAOTVEAN, ORDOXE has now become the main project of guitarist/singer JF Jalbert, supported by guitarist Samuel Landry, bassman JD Bergeron and drummer Steve De Cotret. Created in 1989, this solo project has been quickly pulled aside due to lack of time and the growing popularity of SLAOTVEAN. However, in 2006, Jalbert decided to give a second breath to ORDOXE and recorded "Sorrick Ked Tho". Clearly different from all his previous works, ORDOXE presents a darker sound. Providing grim moods and evil ambiences, the album has been well received by the underground scene. And then in 2007, came "Magnum Opus", the second album. A journey to the depths of a lost soul that tries to understand the twists and turns of the evil mankind. Unfortunately, once again, Jalbert's other demon was too greedy. SLAOTVEAN took all his energy and ORDOXE was put aside once again, for a more convenient time. And this moment SLAOTVEAN is now dead. ORDOXE is now rising with fierce and might!”

There is no mistaking extreme metal you either love it or hate it, there is no in between. For me, the low tuned gruff growls and high pitched squeals are a joy to behold. Surrounded by irresistible thuds of embracing beats, rapacious riffs and harsh, lurid bass hooks the extremities become apparent and they either suck you into their magical weave or spit you out into a festering corner, either way, the music grabs your attention as on the beginning of this album with the track We are Eternal.

  

The fast pace demonic gallop of ‘The Auspicious One’ holds a hypnotic rhythm and maniacally unfolds into an addictive nightmare of sorts, however, it holds a rapacious beast that nobody can ignore as hard as they try. Trepas I has another two parts to it. The first one is harsh and abrasive and spawns a cantankerous rhythm but is tempered with grizzly vocal savagery. Your Sorrow, My Sorrow time to take some throat pastilles as the vocal is rip-roaring and energetic, add in powerful also! It's melodic core is emotive and toxic as well as thoroughly volatile! Sword of Damocles the grooves of which flow in the band's favour and rips into the senses like an express train. It shows a truly sadistic side that flirts suggestively and is strikingly rich and powerful in its rhythmic sway. Soyez Illumines reads you the riot act, fiercely invading the audial like a parasite, never loosening its iron grip and purposefully intensifying its vision. A Passage in Time roars like a hungry Tiger stalking its prey in the wild. It is an untamed track with almost physical powers that lead you to higher driven melodies. Trepas II is slightly slower than its first outing part I but none the less edgy and showing signs of malice in its striking riffs and glorious blast beats. The Essence of Life is a jangle of riffs that stand out from raucous blast beats and will no doubt burn the senses leaving them smouldering in its wake! It is hungry for attention and emerges triumphant in its boldness. Trepas III the concluding part III from Towards Eternity gets straight down to business and molests the ears with a burned harshness that is typically familiar with its genre. It relentlessly parades its confident manner and has no trouble winning favour!

ORDOXE – remember that name! All because the lady loves Black Magic!

The guitar riffs on this track weave an intense twisting array of mental madness along with the savagery that is executed in the vocal arena – let me introduce you to Doris. She’s evil personified believe me and works through the vocal secretions of Eddie Hermida who seems to be possessed by her spirit. It is like no other track I have heard before! Silence it isn’t as it pumps out its toxic malignant rage as well as a torrential riffage and strenuous vocal that feels like it is submerging your head under water. Listen is another twisting inhumane ramble of bleating rampancy that lies over a surrounding landscape of melodic suggestiveness. The riffage is likely to put you in a room with a jacket that fastens up the back! Dying in a Red Room suddenly there is a coldness, reaching a minus temperature as this sinister track unfolds very precisely and deliberately, sending shock waves down your spine. Hold me up, hold me down begins not knowing which way is up or down but soon makes up its mind to go straight for the jugular vein and leaves one mesmerised by its harsh addictive qualities. As the goose bumps grow bigger the pain increases so be prepared for a metal examination you may not recover from! Run holds a melodic drum beat and then explodes into a flurrying mass of riffs and bass, then calmed by a very monotone vocal, although the music wants to escape from its vocal restraints. The Zero holds its own little party with a sharp flurry of strings and melodic rhythm and then strengthened by mini explosions but certainly, the vocals, later on, don’t do the band any favours as it sounds off kilter. Conformity is a very diverse track compared to the previous ones with a beautiful soft vocal and calming guitar chords. Don’t be careful you might hurt yourself nestles back into their death metal roots the final track pushes everything to the limits. It is certainly a great track to end on as it will leave you wanting more and is the strongest track on the album. Accentuating its rampant frivolity and aggressive vocal prowess leaving its mark like a boot print in wet sand! The majestic wickedness is all too plain to see, it is an album that will trick you, coax you and throttle you all at the same time!

Well, Great Dane Records are back with more brutality in the form of Old School Death Metallers Sepulchral who have resurrected a few tracks from the noughties and thrust them into daylight so their eyes burn!! The vocals are just so low-toned it is like being in Hell and listening to Satan give a sermon! Internal Decomposition is madness brewing a concoction of sheer hate? The frenzied attack on the audial will make you think you have just died and landed in a void. Disembowelment of the Dead is another of those thought-provoking tracks that stalk its prey. There’s no escape in this bitter tirade of spewing madness that does, however, contain a good solid rhythm that is extremely excitable. Vampirus Spectrum sounds like it could be all about the bass player, although the vocals from Thierry makes his presence felt with an intensifying and terrifying growl that sends the goose bumps down your spine like shards of splintered glass. Putrefying Mass (1992) Now a jump back in time and the track although with its mighty groove doesn’t seem to have the fullness of sound surrounding it like on the first track, although for its time the way it sounded back then was new and unique so matters little.  Disembowelment of the Dead (1992) this track doesn’t have all the embellishments as the newer version and a lot less musical as the vocals are more prominent but none the less scary. Personal Suffering (1992) the chugs on this are just so creative and thrilling. For me, the vocals add to that addiction, nothing better than a low toned gruff vocal to make the hair stand on end! Rigor Mortis (1991) another grizzly track going further back to 1991. Hard to tell if the vocals are snorting or talking or roaring but they are still magnificent and really get the feeling of pure dread off to a T. Putrefying Mass (1991) sounding a bit rough around the edges and not as crisp as the later version but it still escalates its madness with an irresistible imagination. Internal Decomposition (1991) this track can still hold its own with not a lot taken away or added into the later version, although, it still kicks ass to a certain degree.
