firmly placed on the back of my left hand – the words read “Save the planet it’s the only one with beer” although it should
have had the word beer replaced with the word METAL!

Murphy and Gemma Smith excelled
with this line-up! Of course with the invaluable help of Mike Hardy! Although, I was not happy at having to wait until
9.00pm for the first band to grace the stage being a hungry crazed metal head -
but it was well worth the wait!

The Lomax is just one superb venue! Friendly
staff, a superb sound tech – Chris who
was called up last minute at 5 to do the show proved his worth! Liz the ever smiling female bouncer who
is always helpful and friendly and Frank
Hedges the down to earth owner of the Lomax – who says he is now getting
into the metal! What a team!

Formed on 11th
March 2010 and seen about three times previously at the Zanzibar Arkaidence fall into the precarious
genre of Prog Rock.
It is an acquired
taste and difficult to navigate at times especially when you listen to a lot of
extreme metal as I do. But I do appreciate the work that goes into making their
music.
Al mentioned to
the crowd with regard to the band’s name “Can you spell it?” Good point Indeed,
I have a bit of trouble remembering if it is Arkaidence
or Arkaidance – but it is however spelt ARKAIDENCE
with an E.
Pete “The
Groper” Roper did an amazing job on drums – hair flying everywhere and a beard
to be proud of! :D Sadly though on occasions Al’s vocals sounded a little flat
and off key, but that could may well have been due to the feedback coming
through the stage speakers as a few of the bands said that they experienced a
whistling sound whilst performing but Chris was unable to do much about it as
the system was then on overload. But Al put in 100% on the night it has to be
said.
I felt slightly
sorry for Arkaidence as they were
teamed up with some extremely aggressive bands and although Arkaidence are powerful they were not
in the same vein as the other bands playing which must have been difficult for
them to say the least.
However, the
performance was sustained and vibrant and the guys did a superb job on their
very last track “The forgotten one” the build-up was immense and Al really did
nail it.

Formed in
December 2010 these guys really know how to be aggressive. Adam Omari was strangely missing from the
line up and I didn’t really have chance to find out the reason behind it, but
despite that the band were savagely aggressive during last night’s performance.
I have wanted
to see these guys play for a while after clicking on a link on Facebook some
time back.
They are quite
quiet off stage not really socialising with anyone but on stage they come
alive, but the heads up was that a few people were not really into their kind
of metal and of the more “screamo” variety but I personally think that the band
were good live and enjoyed the set immensely.
I didn’t notice
there was no bass player until Mike mentioned it as I was too busy trying to
get my head around the deeply ferocious vocals screamed out by Danny O’Keefe as
the guy is so skinny I just couldn’t imagine the gruffness coming from his
vocal chords and was looking around the venue for another vocalist!
Pounding and
thrilling to watch with very rhythmical power and a tight performance too! Glad
I was finally able to witness the band live! The wait was worth it, although I
wish the band had been a little more social and stayed a bit longer at the gig
after their set.

Yet another
band that formed in the year 2010 – The amazing Bury the Conscious who like I said before have grown in extreme
confidence each time I get to witness them live! This performance was no
exception, despite the problems the band faced on stage with the feedback
although un-noticeable from crowd perspective proving to all that Bury the Conscious have risen to higher
ground and are now so professional and can deliver the goods under any
circumstances.

A truly superb
performance was achieved last night.
Mike jumped around the stage with utter abandon – his shocking red hair looked on
fire under the bright gaze of the stage lights, whilst Matt Clynch who was high
on vodka and red bull gave a punishing performance on drums.
Luke’s facial
features looked on in wonder with every strike of the bass and wonderful to
watch, and Matt O’Donnell got down and dirty with his guitar despite getting
electric shocks from the microphone during sound check his vocals were superb
and on target!
The chaos pad – (I would say the fifth member of the band) a small white box threw out some immense sound which left everyone awestruck!
Amazing what a little white box can do when used to full capacity!
At the end of
the set the band were literally falling over totally spent at their aggressive
performance. Mike’s eyeliner had moved from his eyes and was half way down his
face which was heavily sweat laden and not surprising after that set – just incredible!
Go and experience
the set as the band is playing again on Friday 24th August at the
awesome Zanzibar.

This power
crazed quintet of madmen formed in 2010.
(2010 was a good year for the bringing together of bands as you can see
from the last three reviews above)
Oceanis - to say they excelled is a bit of an
understatement – they literally carved up the Lomax and ate the crowd alive!
I had wanted to
see them live now since they started and with one thing or another like
cancelled shows never managed it until now.
They certainly
are a “Live experience” loud, heavy, melodic and unpredictable – the unpredictable
bit you will realise as the review goes on!
Talking to Joe
outside the venue, when he signed my copy of the bands 3 track EP entitled “Planets”
(Due for review soon) He spoke about his cat – he was down to earth and
friendly to chat to... but on stage this guy turns into Satan himself. His
expressions morph into one of pure menacing evil.

Never having
witnessed a show from the guys before I was one of the unsuspecting victims as
Joe walked up and towered above me – his face distorted in absolute hunger for
the power of sound surrounding him – I wasn’t sure what was going to happen and
thought by the look on his face he would rip me apart with just his evil glare
alone! I was however spared!
He moved on to
his next victim pushing them, snarling at them and teasing them whilst growling
and screaming. The rest of the band stayed on the blisteringly hot stage and
just melted – sweat running from their foreheads as they spewed out heavy as
f*** riffs and blindingly awesome drum beats.

But even the
band weren’t safe from Joe’s antics as he untied shoe laces and caused general
mayhem all around him. The guys were laughing on stage and clearly enjoying the
atmosphere they had created.
The crowd moved
back towards the bar trying to escape the attention of the madman possessed –
nobody escaped, not even Frank the Owner as he innocently collected glasses from
the tables, Joe pushed into him and Frank joined in the madness with a wide
grin on his face.
The music was
indeed punishingly heavy it felt like you were being pulled from the inside out
– eaten alive, chewed ferociously, swallowed, regurgitated and spat out! A
truly amazing feeling it was too! Mesmerizingly superb!!
The band does
have its quieter moments although short lived and when they do they sound beautifully
melodic but the aggression is never far away.
The band
managed to squeeze in another track called Planets right at the end of the set
and nobody left until the end proving that Oceanis
are indeed a force to be reckoned with!
I urge everyone
to witness Oceanis live – because once
sampled NEVER FORGOTTEN!
