This
album is an intense surge of magnetism that draws you into its finely tuned
riffs and highly pleasurable at giving the ears a good lick! Blossoming with
amazing quality the instruments working together to producing a superb rampage
of thrashing melody. The vocal scathing’s are powerful and ravishing, bursting
with sheer unmerciful grandeur and literally running away with itself leaving a
mass of dust in its wake! The choking rhythms are thick and vibrant. Fuelled
full of tenacious groove it plants the seed of pure unadulterated emotion make
no mistake!
There
is no messing around on this masterpiece. Making way for a thrilling escapade
from start to finish. Brooding with frantic enterprise and riffs quite
literally made of steel and bristling with all the great qualities of thrash
and death combined.
It would be difficult to pick a favourite
track here as they are all pretty intense, creative and drenched in utter
madness!
The
vocals are punchy and create a rasping all their very own, while the music is
heavy and compelling with each striking riff and equally impressive rhythm the band
throws our way.
Bordering
on insane it possesses plenty of attitude and is stocked up with plenty for the
ears to gravitate to, so making it a gripping encounter.
Bull-Riff Stampede work
well together and have produced an amazing array of tracks that fuse together
and become something magnificent.
I
cannot see anyone ignoring this album – do so at your peril, as it will catch
up with you and simply devour you from the inside out!
It’s
clearly an apt title for the band to get their message across and get it across
they do with resounding effect! Its antagonistic flair gnaws feverishly and doesn’t
let up all the way through its ten strong hold.
Its
advantage is holding all the winning cards to become a very successful album
for Bull-Riff Stampede.
“Two-man
post rock outfit, Defy the Ocean, are a band whose story stretches back the
better part of two decades. Having initially met in high school, Chris Theo
(vocals & guitars) and Marcos Economides (drums & guitars) first jammed
together at the respective ages of fifteen and nine, but later separated and
went their own ways. It wasn’t until 2009 that the pair reconnected and began
working on material together under the Defy the Ocean moniker.
The
duo released their debut singles at the tail end of 2010, and went on to
release their debut EP, “Myopic”, in late 2012. They released another single in
mid-2013, and since then they’ve been focused on finalising their latest opus;
the splendid “Elderflower”. Set for a September 2nd 2016 release, and produced
by the band, “Elderflower” signifies the zenith of Defy the Ocean’s sound;
expertly weaved layers of rock with thick atmospheric waves of melancholy!”

you are soul searching for something ‘off the cuff’ so to speak, look no
further than Defy the Ocean as here you will find your atmospherics and
melancholy no mistake! It’s rather haunting, quirky and not to mention
oppressive, but holds its own ground. Elderflower
rather catches your breath for being all of the above while Poison possesses a more dark and
sinister edge.
There
are no boisterous riffs here, just mundane solitude that wraps itself
deliberately around the audial with deep disturbing results!

“Formed
in London in 1975 amid the chaos that was the Sex Pistols, it’s often
overlooked just what a great band they are, and what great records they made. The
Sex Pistols are no ordinary band; their story is long and complicated,
and not without its casualties. Without them popular culture in the last 30+
years would be very, very different. The Pistols didn’t just kick down doors;
they kicked them off the wall. For a band who (really) only released one album
and four singles, they spawned a sea of imitators; and still do to this day.
Not bad for a band that supposedly couldn’t play. Yeah right! The
Sex Pistols could certainly play; one listen to their ferocious slab of
raw rock and roll will soon tell you that!”

At
the tender age of 13 and just in my prime there materialised The
Sex Pistols, a crazed punk band whom nearly every school child wanted
to aspire to and I was no different! I loved the fact they said and did what
they wanted and wore extremely outrageous clothes. Their songs scorned society
and brought out the anarchy that was inside each and every teenager at the
time.
I
first saw them on TV and was astounded at their crass behaviour as did a lot of
teens at the time. Parents all over were reprimanding their wayward teens for
trying to mimic the band which only added fuel to the fire!
The
outlandish spikes and torn clothing were part of what everyone wanted to wear
and difficult when school uniform was what you were told to wear, but
underneath our uniforms were Sex Pistol T Shirts and obscure
jewellery that went unnoticed even by the most eagle-eyed teacher.
So
the scene is set and pogoing became the new rage to sounds like Anarchy
in the UK and God Save the Queen with teens
running riot and wearing safety pins in their ears – I wasn’t quite so lucky
with the safety pins in my ears, (over protective Parents) however, I was
getting good at back combing my hair and learning all the words, plus I hated Royalty
even at an early age!
The
only ‘problem’ pogoing in the bedroom was the stylus jumping on vinyl as it was
back then, to combat this we used to pogo furthest from the player in order not
to scratch the record!
It
didn’t matter that Rotten/Lydon sang out of key, it all added to the slur that
the Sex
Pistols produced, plus it gave us a chance to swear a lot and be part
of a new trend!
Of
course the Sex Pistols were not without their casualties and one was the
unfortunate demise of the legendary Sid Vicious (who replaced Glen Matlock in
77 due to drug use) who then met girlfriend Nancy Spungen which culminated in
her being stabbed in a New York Hotel and Vicious being arrested on suspicion
of her murder.
Vicious
died as a result of his mother supplying him with Heroin on which he later
overdosed on in his sleep.
So
Anarchy prevailed under the guise of the infamous Sex Pistols, assault,
drug use and even murder!

Have
you ever wondered what music is like in other cities? Well apparently in
Sheffield Horror Punk has reared its head in the shape of Gorgeous Morgue who are fresh out of the studio recording their new
four track E.P entitled From the Slab.
It
was about 6 years ago that I came across a certain Jakki Vainn on ‘Myspace’ (remember
that folks?) who was at that point a hardened industrial fanatic and still
looks like that today, although vocally he has gone for a more punk edge this
time around with Gorgeous Morgue. In
fact the band have various elements contained within their Horror Punk genre,
including a bit of death vocals too!
From the Slab
Gorgeous
Morgue’s title track the sampled voice booms out as it launches into a hearty
jolt and sounding very punk in its vocal delivery. The rhythms are boisterous
and rather potent.
My Murder Baby
Has
very epic feel to it as it launches into a tirade of madness. It’s a rather
stirring track that offers a chanting vocal but none the less catchy and crisp
with an infectious rhythm. It does however, hold a sluggish feel with grouchy
tones and executed in a way that feels like it is sung rather ‘tongue in cheek’
but a great track all the same.
AMA
This
track reveals a stalking intensity with stupendous death metal vocals along
with the slurring punk vocal but together and more importantly they work along
with the harmonies increasing their emotive force and devilish lyrical content!
Dark
Has
to be my favourite track because of that lilting rhythm that simply melts. Helping
it along are some great riffs and strong harmonies that go off kilter in places
adding to their punk theme no doubt. It takes on a sinister edge during the
middle of the track but that coaxing melody is never far away.
Summary:
So
what we have here is a rather eclectic mix of Industrial, punk, death and
zombies. So plenty for everyone are contained within these four tracks. The
catchy rhythms blossom with a superb melodic endeavour and spiced with magnetic
character. The climatic moments switch between punk and death in places so
nobody can say the band will stagnate any time soon!
It
has a split personality for sure which is good for the listener as they are
pushed forcibly out of their comfort zone and into a bedlamic punk territory with extras!
Obsessed
with ghosts, ghouls, corpses and graveyards? Then look no further Gorgeous Morgue will delight and
entertain you with their gothicy, punky blend of eclectic madness.
It
kind of saunters and no doubt will exact a reaction to its insatiable drama,
however I cannot help but feel that Gorgeous
Morgue are a live band and live is exactly where you will see them shine
the most!
The
E.P will grow on you the more you listen with its varying textures and insane
exploits are certainly bold and captivating there’s no mistake, so take the
time to listen and let it grow on you - as Death becomes you!!

Formed
in 2011 and from the Bristol area are this boisterous death metal army that are
just two man strong. Mike Alexander
on Guitars and Doug Anderson on Vocals.
It beggars belief really, that these two guys could make a sound as lethal
as this, but it is here for all to bear witness to.
With
the bands lyrics stemming from Greek mythos, and ancient Roman history it is
clear we have an epic journey ahead of us.
With
the short intro Othrys wailingand hypnotic drum beat from a
middle eastern texture, to a ‘slaughterous’ affair now safely tucked under our
belts, the next track Castrate the Father of the Sky begins
with its eager attempt to massacre the ears and exceed the sound barrier. The
familiar low toned growling surges with aggression amid a total battering of
blast beats. The general consensus here is that Beast from Beneath is the
favourite track by many, and hardly surprising as it shows a deep rebellion and
low gruff growling that would get anyone’s blood coursing ferociously through
the veins. Descend Abysmal Void welcomes the listener to engage in a
robust and enjoyable enterprise that snarls with utter contempt. Ingurgitate
the Traitor has that air of eerie sinister about it as it glides
effortlessly from the speakers and brings chills along the backbone. However,
soon after, turning suddenly malignant and fiery it packs a punch right to the
jaw bone and boy is this going to hurt! As it skims into an unstoppable rage
the guitar thunderously spews forth a powerful intervention. Into
the Abode of the Dead actually messes with the mind as a serious set of
riffs present themselves with a cleaner more sophisticated edge but a short
filler track of just 59 seconds. The Unseen Onegets back to business
and throws out a compelling urgency of screams that converge on the ears with
imposing familiarity – yes we have all been here before, us death metal fans!
As it festers and snarls it is clear to hear the depth and very nature of the
track as all-consuming! Skies that bear Thunder is a torrentof
abuse that bare’s witness to savage frets and a very unholy vocal that seems to
enjoy in relishing gluttony. Phlegethon Rising playshost
to a particular zest for life in a death metal kind of way, if you get my
meaning? It is hardly dead! With steps taken to beat the living hell out of
their musical playground and leave only ashes in their wake! Minos
doesn’t take any pity on the ears either, as you would expect. The
savage growls come thick and fast and perpetuate the moment! Eclipsed by a
deadly onslaught of blast beats and guitar that is equally matched in
aggression. Neither like Gods nor Men lulls you into a false sense of
security as it appears to start of slow but yet explodes into the realisation
that Imperium don’t do slow and once
again offer a scintillating and rampageous attack that can be felt all along
the vertebrate. Titanomachy is the title track to this mega beast of an album
and bears witness to thunderous pounding and guttural snarls that bite with
vehement ferocity.
There
is no getting away from the mega tons of brutalism that bears testimony to this
fierce and prolonged attack on the audial cavities. It firmly plants its
roaring and striking assault with a grand melodic gesture – yes death metal can
be melodic too! The skilful endeavour of frets blend into the landscape along
with some superb resounding blast beats, painting a very colourful picture
indeed!
The
potent layers of musical scope are unmerciful and solder everything together
giving the listener so much to feast on. It teases and torments, twisting and
turning into one magnificent album that warrants serious attention!
Yes
it’s still staggering to think that all this has come together from the hands
and minds of indeed, two men!

bands, some artists, some albums stand alone. They don’t slip neatly into a
genre pigeonhole; they don’t readily display a host of obvious influences and
inspirations, they don’t toe the party line or say all the right things to woo
fans to their banner. Trent Griggs is such an artist, ThrOes are such a band and This Viper Womb is most definitely such
an album.
This
Viper Womb grew at its own pace, coming into being over a
number of years. It is the worldview, the philosophy, the truth of Trent
Griggs. Every element of this music, every word of these lyrics has been
crafted meticulously to convey this truth. With the assistance of notorious
Australian metal scene vocalist, James Ludbrook and current Suffocation
drummer, Kevin Talley (also ex-Misery Index, ex-Six Feet Under, ex-Dying Fetus
and a host more) Trent Griggs has brought an incredible extreme metal album to
life; wild and unrestrained yet perfectly planned – chaos within structure,
structure within chaos.
With
the established ‘rules’ of metal having little relevance to ThrOes, Griggs, like other great

Permanent Midnight
Is
just hot off the press and when I say hot I mean boiling point hot, the hot
that obliterates the audial with no mistake as these aggressors tear strips
from the tender listening components and show no mercy while they do it. The
sizzling rawness that protrudes will have the speakers emitting smoke!
Permanent Midnight
Shock to the Guts
Here
the vocal blasting shapes the track with its extreme and to the point curdling,
the overwhelming menace goes that one stage further and pummels with severe
ferocity. Striking with sublime and lingering magnetism will be more than a
shock to the guts when one feasts on its power.
Dead Lights
Another
stirring track that paves the way for a malignant fest of ‘more than’ grouchy,
but utterly vicious temperament and savage devouring. The vocal surging is
deadly and exudes from the silver tonsils of Trent Griggs and additional vocals
by James Ludbrook who attack with extreme intensity.
Conscience Makes Cowards
Is
a rather slower paced ensemble of cautious strings that are strikingly powerful
and imposing! However, the caustic tones push it forward into a bombastic
frenzy while still housing a potent melody.
Nothing left for the Vultures
Firing
with a rabid intensity and vulgar aggressive snarls that are not afraid to
attack the track emerges as a melodic venture but with added sting in its
vicious tail and fuelled with a deep creative antagonistic flair.

Brewing
and brooding, this track takes leaves of its probably now numb senses and eagerly

D.N.A. Corruption
Slowing
things down to a more amicable pace this track weaves an eerie path of contempt
and yet still has the listener gripped with eager appeal and urgency. The
musical adventure just took a diverse turn and its exploits are bold.
Summary
From
the off this album will leave its mark imprinted on the brain and definitely on
the ears! It grows like an out of control fungus, infecting all it touches. There
is a demonic feel incorporated in its muscular stride, for this is an album that
knows not how to take small steps.
The
mood is one of utter control and take control it will, so say goodbye to your
senses as you slot this one into the player. It will capture, devour and grip
the attention like no tomorrow and may provoke madness truth be told, as the
tracks unfold.
At
the end of this album the listener will no doubt feel they have had every
muscle ‘spent’ they will ache, their ears will bleed and literally there will
be ‘nothing left for the Vultures’ as the flesh will have diminished from the
bone!
No
matter how many words I write it probably won’t do this collection of songs
justice. And yes, It’s more than just an album – it truly is unique and an
experience well worth taking even if to push you well outside your comfort
zone! Although for me, well I am happy in this zone of extremity!
It
is difficult to imagine something, as intense as this, but Dissident Metal clearly holds a place in the strong metal
