Overview
Well, all I can say is Liverpool Metal Community be ashamed! Be very
ashamed!
Last night’s gig at the wonderful Zanzibar Club, contained two
amazing acts, The fantastic legends that are Tech metallers Oceanis and newcomers to the Liverpool
scene - the breath-taking Dutch industrial quintet Deadcell – (Renoized did
not play due to monetary issues)
These two bands put so much into their sets and played to just a
handful of people, which was extremely embarrassing for all concerned.
I hope it does not put the band off from playing Liverpool again –
although if it did I would not be surprised!
Not many industrial acts – if any have ventured into Liverpool to
play and judging by the lack of support for the scene not many will, if ever,
even try to play here.
Not everyone can be broke, on holiday or washing their damn hair...
FFS! So it probably boils down to apathy as usual for the vast majority,
although on leaving the Zanzibar it was well noted that all the clubs in the
surrounding areas were heaving with dolly wannabees, teetering around on high
heels and skirts up to their navels in a bid to try and ‘Look Cool!” and
failing miserably, but it said a lot, in fact it spoke volumes.

even remarked to me after the gig “Is there even a metal scene here?” The
answer to that was a resounding “No, not really, until some mainstream band
plays and then it is every man for himself!”
So how do you think mainstream bands make it? Answer is simple even
to the most retarded, is that you need followers and people who believe in your
art to make it happen and it is plain to see that the so called ‘Metal Heads’
of Liverpool would rather stay on their fat backsides than go and support the
live scene and yet they will be the first to complain when there are no venues
supporting metal and all the Liverpool bands have moved elsewhere for other
more ‘metal’ scenes.
All the hours of learning instruments, creating tracks, lugging
heavy gear about, money spent on rehearsals and then getting on the stage in a
bid to showcase their talents – think about it for a minute! Most of you are in
bands – imagine how you would feel? To spend all that time, energy and money
and not have anyone come and support you? Say no more!
Thanks Liverpool you have really played a blinder last night! Maybe
the scene would be better off without you as you clearly do not contribute
anything to it!

Last night’s set from Oceanis
was raw and to the point! There is no messing around with these guys, they
do what they say on the label and that is kick ass!
Although the band have ‘tempered’ their set somewhat to include the other
members and allowing them to have ‘their’ moment, which now means that Oceanis offer the fullest deal
possible.
Joe the bands vocalist of course will always rule where showmanship
is concerned and still has the crowd eating out of his hand, in his usual mode
of lording it over the audience with the provoking pushing and stealing of
headgear but even he has toned his act down to allow the limelight to spread to
the other members who do a fantastic job on stage, let us not forget that!
The heat was on and this led to the removal of Joe’s shirt, the
sweat oozing down his back and bringing a new life to the many tattoos emblazoned
on it.
Funny how when Joe surged into the audience in a violent frenzy he
met his nemesis Dylan who was actually taller than him, (and that says
something!) but this didn’t stop Joe pushing him all the same. :)
I did say to Joe before the show “And no pulling my hair!” after the
last time as his grip nearly tore my head off let alone my hair! He did march
over to me standing at the left of stage but then thought better of it and
moved away – but you just never know what will happen when Oceanis take to the stage.
Stu the bands legendary guitarist also sang on a couple of tracks
which added the spice to an already ‘hot’ set.
Oceanis gave it their all last night as they do on each and every gig and no
doubt will continue to do so for a very long time to come, but whether they
continue to play in Liverpool is another matter.

This was Deadcell’s debut
gig to Liverpool. It took 12 hours for them to get to the gig and they played superbly to just
a handful of people.
Their set was bristling with heavy riffs courtesy of Snowflame the
industrial guitarist and vixen of the band, who wore an amazing red and black
stage outfit and Stefaan the mild mannered guy off stage who then turned
monster on stage lurked under a sea of hair.
Together their industrial sound brought the Zanzibar to life. For me
two tracks stood out above the rest, (although you couldn’t be failed to be
moved with the vibrancy from each of them) ‘Unchained’ and ‘Dog of War’ such
heavy tracks with catchy memorable lyrics hard not to sing along to these,
despite not hearing them previously.

They worked a very tight ship all in all. Dylan the band’s bassist
seemed to be in a world of his own and was either smirking wildly or closing
his eyes as each riff was not just felt but lived
through-out their entire set.
We weren’t going to let them slink off as they played the final
track and so shouts for more provoked a two track encore and believe me when I
say, this was no time to take a rest and sit on the side lines.
I didn’t care that my feet were burning through moving in time to
the wild and furious industrial jabs that were forthcoming, all I wanted was to
bask in the ferocity of the bands masterpieces and would have quite happily
listened to them for another two hours at least!
