“Esdrelon is the name a plain in Palestine region, it's also known as valley of Armageddon, in the prophetic sense, Armageddon means kill, cut off, killing instinct, this valley was the stage bloody battles in the past, and according to some military strategists, a war against Israel necessarily should begin in the plain of Esdrelon, which for some religions would be the beginning of Armageddon.

The band set up in the industrial area of ABC, Brazil at the beginning of 2002.  Esdrelon plays a speed and harmonious thrash metal mixed with traditional heavy metal and more aggressive death metal parts. It is with a proposal of constant questioning of social and cultural paradigms in a world in collapse and near to chaos, where truths are questioned and the faith is put in doubt.

Esdrelon is back seven years after releasing their debut E.P "Your Truth." They have released the debut full-length in July 2012 "Dust in Our Eyes" on Casket Music and is streaming an official video for a track from the album, "Voices of the Exile."

Agonizing in Faith

A barrage of fuzzy beats dizzily play in the background at a very low volume, so stupidly I turned the volume up and was immediately hit straight between the eyes with monumental rhythms and guttural growls – that really made my eyes water I can tell you! This track contains a lot of melodic sway and killer licks but also some beautiful guitar moments also come into play.  The thundering crescendos reach their peak very quickly like a very expensive car on a motorway from 0 to 130 mph in a few seconds. The tempo changes are inspiring as well as the guitar solo with plenty of crisp velocity and the gnarly bits that transcend speak for themselves.

Living in Contradiction

Excellent vocal performance by Darcio – what scope he has! Whilst Cleber really flaws the guitar, the drums pummel ferociously adding to the array of gristle and infused melodic rhythms that possess breath-taking speed and power. These guys know how to conduct heaviness with melodic beautifully to the extreme.

Voice of the Exile

A simple Mexican old fashion sampled song can be heard – but not turning the dial up – I know what happened last time... I was right not to... an express train just swept through my speakers! Esdrelon are wickedly extreme and inject fuel pumped rhythms and melodies like a running tap, everything is seamless and flows superbly on this track – the guitar acrobatics are just outstanding and lay on dark strong heavy blast beats – one amazing track!

Ideology

Evilly demonic vocal spews forth some amazing guttural growls amid tempestuous guitar riffs and a superbly strong bass hook. The drumming really hits you in the gut, you can feel the strength of it as it hits the speakers and resonates deep within the body, offering a certain bombastic and heavy feel that of course is bathed in melodic grandeur.

Fucking in the name of God

Interesting title! A barrage of pummelling beats defiantely sweep with dramatic force along with a more gnarly guttural ear battering, again prominently brutal and stupendously fast.  Its magnitude of sound literally wraps itself around you and chokes the life out of you.  This has a more progressive feel about it as the guitar does yet more technical acrobatics to a wash of surrounding sounds. – Brilliant!

Labour

Labour is right – the frantic agile finger work from Cleber really work their magic here totally balancing a perfect formula of technical and death that thrash louder than a Boeing 747. Great use of melodies blend the track together so well – superb indeed.

We are Sick

Great swelling thunderous rhythms roll like gigantic tidal waves that will sweep you into oblivion and eventually kill you with the ferocity in which it portrays itself, uncompromising it surges not leaving anything in its path like molten lava flowing angrily down a volcano. This track could be anything it wanted, you can not argue with its powerful and melodic passages that tunnel into your head and who would want to?

Dust in our Eyes

The title track to this thunderous album, comes to life with a forging blast beat of utter sick ferocity, slowing briefly to offer a growling whisper of vocals that sound like Satan is calling you from below. Full of intrigue and intensity and clearly shows diversity.  Once again the frantic content is displayed with a methodical approach of heavy laden riffing and dramatic drum beats. To be honest I am not surprised there is ‘Dust in our Eyes’ the way this band savagely attack! Saying that they mellow briefly and a Viking feel to the track comes into play – but it soon leaves the ‘mellow’ behind and goes on to bring more frantic ferocity to the fore. – This is outstanding!

Intimate verses

Ambient atmospherics are portrayed here with an even lower guttural accompaniment – if that is possible! Amid a sweeping guitar like rhythm and madness on the skins as the beats come forging forth with absolute aggression. Try not to move your head to this – I dare you!

Intimate verses - virulently superb!

Disturbed

A scale of mesmerising riffs form immediately from out of the ashes comes a monster of majestic proportions as the guitar literally sets itself on fire reaching new heights. Again melodically superb with a magnificent array of vocal splendour.

To Sum up:

Well to say this album is outstanding is even an understatement – I do not think a word exists to fully give this band their due. Monumentally superb will have to do for now until I can actually come up with a word or words that really compliment Esdrelon to the full.

Not one duff track on the entire album, no fillers, just pure unadulterated technical, speedy, thrashing death metal – I just wonder how they are going to top this?

Lord Knows I Tried (Album Version)

Clanking and a sampled voice – which is uninterrupted by mutated rhythms and a slow deliberate vocal with hazy beautiful synth sounds. This is intensely superb! Although it possesses a slow beat your body still moves to the interlocking layers of rhythms that pump through your veins, wave after wave of sheer brilliance just constantly knocks at the aural cavities and your body responds by moving in time to the wonderful deluge that surrounds it.

C.C.C.P.C.C.T.V.

This bombards the ears with a bubbling of powerful catchy rhythms, constant and heavy with a fluctuating synth that hypnotically gives this track a nice ferocious bite. The great samples surround a clean but interesting vocal that you can not get enough of. The melody is a definite turn on factor here and no doubt will have your foot tapping if you are too shy to get up and dance, but the intensity of the track alone will have you mesmerized into moving your body – one of the side effects of listening to Implant.

Scanned

Popping sounds with more sampled voices offer intriguing bubbling pulsating rhythm that again makes you - body responsive!! This is highly addictive listening and makes leaders followers as the beats command you to move, rather like a sound to light unit... unable to resist the swelling, compulsive waves – I do not want this to stop!

The City

With an urgent screech and then a pumping hypnotic rhythm emerges. A soft vocal can be heard over a busy synth that tunnels its way through a combination of star wars effects. Again it commands movement from the body as it furiously busies and carries on its way into your head. Jagged synth sounds emerge and again that powerful beat just sweeps you into the magnetic flow like a gigantic tsunami – it will drown you alive!

Jour Nucléaire

A French title with German sampled words.  The quickening pace carries a female voice and lots of beautiful busy synth rhythms – this is harsh, aggressive and will scar the mind with a dance floor grooves and punchier infectious beats.

I'm In Control

A nice industrial sampling of incidental sounds that protrude edgily through the speakers and then a crisp melodic wave of rhythm begins with a throbbing intensity that will immediately have you hooked into its sway and literally bring you to a climax as it demonstrates perfect balance, pitch and damn sexy beats all wrapped in a delicious swathe of melody with clean but powerful vocal.

Joe Is Dead

A mechanical voice sample says ‘Joe is Dead’ to what sounds like a theme tune for child’s television show and then a flurry of pulsating tones usher forth and a voice chanting Joe! Joe! Joe! But who the hell is Joe??? Well, apparently Joe is dead! But the track is very much alive and kicking!

The Game

Sounds like someone is playing a computer game and a female voice says ‘Shouldn't we be doing something more productive?’ But indeed Implant is by bringing to life this intense track and sorry for the pun in advance – but Implant just upped their game and got themselves up to the next level as the stunted synth notes pummel angrily yet melodically like a hammer to the brain!

Biodigital Nightmare

Ticking like a time bomb to a sampled voice. The vocal is harsher than previous but not so harsh it turns into an incoherent scream it keeps its composure amid a constant rhythm of icicle like notes that reign down to a spasmodic drum beat and sequences that embellishes the track superbly.

Len Lemeire

The Product

A sophisticated shrill sound of keys and harsh pummelling beats converge together to form a magnitude of rhythmic sound waves and I would not mind betting will fill a dance floor within seconds when played live. Compulsive foundation on which to base uncompromising emotive and dark melodic grooves!

Johnny

Strong dark ambient low end synth with a fuzzy array of sharp rhythms and incidental sounds with thought provoking lyrics sung by both male and female. Combining edgy and dramatic with a slightly tongue in cheek feel lyrically but musically no nonsense intense passion with plenty of feeling.  The female vocal really adds a great touch to this track!

I am the teacher

Stunted synth notes blend with a thick wave of ambient rhythm until a sharper synth flavour is injected. The vocals are strong without being too over-zealous. ‘Can you teach me how to lose my innocence’ ‘Can you teach me how to kill?’ asks a female sampled voice – this is where things move into the disturbing and deranged territory with a repetitive rhythm that is like a mind controlling drug.

To Sum up:

A really interesting listen that houses serious potential for a best-selling album, with its musical boundaries being blown out of the water. Each track holding outstanding diversity and forceful flavours, amid melodic wash and groove and if that was not enough it’s addictive and will take hold as soon as you press play as it really stands out from the crowd – this has to be a winner and if not there is definitely no justice in this world.

Vile Insignia have come a long way since playing their first show at the Calgary Metal Fest in 2011, and have now unleashed this 4 track beast entitled “Cruel Dark Aggression” onto the unsuspecting hordes.

Smouldering remains of the sky

Literally combusting with the momentum of a speeding bullet! Raspy screams and gnarly growls play a big part on this track along with high energy blast beats and pulverizing riffs that come together on a bed of sharp rapturous melody.

Beneath the Frozen Soil

This has a supersonic blackened feel as it fights its way to life with infectious rhythms that tunnel into the aural with utter abandon. The kick beats are like time bombs, but sound, and indeed are a lot faster paced, with the ever growing crescendos of riffage, be them plentiful and offering a rich bounty of swelling, rabid fiery melodic sway.

Morbid tales of bloodshed

This begins with some finely attuned melodic guitar which is then interrupted by some unmerciful screams. Its blackened roots darkening and thickening to a constant sway of ominous and manic beats.  Interweaving into it are some mouth-watering riffs that deploy a good sized chunk of slaughter into the carnage. Great track!

Creations of Disharmony

Rhythmic driving rhythms urge forward at a necessary pace for this track to possess a nice ambient flavour, incorporating a bestial vocal and more rabid drumming. It is unrelenting in approach and holds the right amount of abrasiveness whilst still maintaining its constant rhythms of blackened, slow burning grooves.

To Sum up:

The band have created a solid foundation on which to base future releases. A good strong solid 4 track E.P that holds more venom than a pit full of poisonous snakes! It houses rapid fire rhythms, combined with blackened blasts, vicious vocal accompaniment as well as strong meaty bass hooks that make up some serious gut wrenching metal amid a peppering of melodic pampering which fuses fantastically into the mix.

Vile Insignia - seething with a passionate rage that will not only bruise but burn!!  Their neck breaking rhythms are impacting as well as impressive! Superb 4 track E.P. I strongly urge you to listen and savour this!!! 4 Tracks just simply aren’t enough!!

Grá was formed in 2010.  Their lyrical themes touch on the dark aspects of ancient Scandinavian spirituality.

In Cordibus Vestris

For whom the bell tolls... the intro goes on just a tad too long to be interesting and the chants a little too predictable to fully engage the listener.

Necrology of the Witch

The rolling ambient sounds of typical black metal ignite into a distorted overflow of rasping vocals, however, the monastic chanting spoils it for me somewhat. So you won’t get much neck breaking done to this.

Οδεῦovταν πρov τηv Στῦyα

It’s all Greek to me! but apparently means 'On the way to Styx' The sound of trickling water and a clap of thunder prevails, storms a brewing! Dark overtones embellish the track with intrigue to some degree, but little else is happening.

 

Grá

Worms and Crows

A deep contrast to the last 3 tracks as a rip roaring in full throttle thunder storm literally explodes into action! – Time at last, to get that hair flying. It’s intensely rhythmic and energetic with a good constant aggressive beat that twists and turns ferociously into a dark ambience that gallops through its hypnotic core. Excellent!

Helfärd II

Intensifying riffs dominate a hollow drum beat with an immense amount of distortion and gravelly evil vocals ensue. There is a dark melancholic accent of doom hiding behind the slow melodic grooves but other than that everything is kept very low key and rather uninteresting with nothing to feed from.

Freezing Moon

This track however is showing signs of good melodic rhythms with some excellent guitar and drumming.  Vocally incandescent with a crushing edge of dark building passages laced with doom laden structures that go a long way to pleasing the aural.

To Sum up:

A rather disappointing E.P really with there being nothing to pad out the sparseness so it just rides on the bare bones of what could be potential greatness. ‘Worms and Crows’ and ‘Freezing Moon’ are the bands redeeming tracks as they do offer some compositional skill and adaptivity, but the rest of the tracks hold very little in offering something tasty and interesting to really focus on. 

I feel personally that this isn’t showing the band in their true colours and think it could do with being less restrained and sullen.  Granted Black metal is anything but jolly, but there seems to be a lot missing from this recipe, which is a damn shame as there is a lot of potential for the band to work with here but maybe they should combine more rawness into the passages and emphasise their moments in a less subtle way. However there is nothing of real importance here and relatively predictable in places.

“Named after one of Franz Kafka's short stories, Odradek Room is an atmospheric and progressive death-doom band with post-rock leanings from Mariupol, Ukraine. Initially formed in 2008 under the name 'Shards of Silence', the band changed their name at the beginning of 2010, and their first release appeared on the compilation of Doom-art.ru project.

Over time, the band has developed and refined their sound for their debut album 'Bardo. Relative Reality.' Creating dynamic and profound music, rich in tempo and mood variation, Odradek Room has crafted an extremely strong debut which perfectly shows the duality between the aggressive and melancholic sides of death-doom combining slow plodding riffs, soaring emotional melodies, post-rock leanings, and a psychedelic touch to create a rich canvas of sonic majesty.

Their first full-length album, Bardo. Relative Reality was initially recorded in early 2012 and self-released in digital format. However, it was later decided that the album would be re-recorded to fix up a few issues in the recordings, and that process is now complete. The upcoming album, based on the ideas of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and surreal images of the subliminal consciousness was released on Hypnotic Dirge Records in March 2013”

The two words that immediately sparked my attention on reading the band’s involved history was Franz Kafka a man I particularly admire especially for his work called ‘The Metamorphosis’ and to give you an insight here is a quote from it "As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. He was laying on his hard, as it were armour-plated, back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his dome-like brown belly divided into stiff arched segments on top of which the bed quilt could hardly keep in position and was about to slide off completely. His numerous legs, which were pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, waved helplessly before his eyes."

A tale of inadequacy, guilt and disgrace emerges, but there is a twist in the tale as Kafka wrote about the predicament of modern man in such a way it was comical.

To quote a passage from Franz Kafka’s the Odradek story - “The Cares of a Family Man,” the master of literary enigma invents Odradek, a weird domestic creature made up of gnarled and knotted bits of thread, stuck around a star shaped spool. The titular, troubled family man, who narrates Kafka's yarn, sees Odradek lurking throughout the crevices of his house, and seems to know this monster well”

So this other story from Kafka is not so dis-similar to ‘The Metamorphosis” and is somewhat intriguing, which makes me wonder what knotty and gnarled up creature is about to emerge through the spool that is the invention created by Ukraine’s Odradek Room – We shall find out...

Theatre of Forms

A dark ambient layer of melodic doom spreads its wings over some serious sound-scapes of experimental shrill rhythms. It is all housed in a neat little box of melancholic dream-like structures that interlock building a clearer picture of this monster we know as Odradek and it paints a sombre but interesting one. The vocals harsh and scathing really come into their own on this beast of a track and work their magic.

Inflorescence of Silence

The sounds of creaking floorboards are heard the beast Odradek has awoken and a clean vocal emerges from the crevices of a darkened room, however the light shines through an open window and fills this room with an overwhelming melody. Sung in Russian, which pleases me a lot. Although slow and undulating it is not as oppressive as you would think and gives scope for more intense patterns to emerge.

A Painting (Digging into the Canvas of Oil)

Such a shame I can’t understand a lot of Russian, but I do so love languages and the Russian language gives this track intrigue as the encompassing experimental wall of sound literally embellishes the ears and quickens the heartbeat.  It is a very emotional track that literally paints a vivid picture, be it a sad one as the melody is slow but striking in it is approach. It contains a strong bass line that seems to be the foundation of the painting and the streaks of paint on canvas can clearly be heard not seen, as a startling shrill guitar swipes its angular rhythms creating a woven and intricate design that flourishes as the chords reach their climax, whilst the vocals are gnarly and serve to create the bleakness within the picture – this holds so much for the listener to conjure up in the mind.

Suffocation

A slow ballad, but still sung with emotion, deep and intense it carries a sombre array of rhythms that slightly fluctuate and then smooth’s out completely. Holding within its icy fingers a melodic swathe of beauty from within the gloom and is extremely refreshing. The superb guitar solo gives the track perfect balance and despite the title gives the listener clear air to breathe and wallow in, so this begs the question is the beast suffocating in fresh air as it leaves the safety of the crevices within the floorboards?

Faded Reality

A more demonic feel feeds this track – the beast is fighting back and coming into its own here. The evil rhythm holds within it an aggressive stance amid the striking guitar and harsh beats dipping then to more icy depths with a tingling flurry of keys that strike like rain, it unfolds into a more eerie grain of encompassing fire. Tremendous feeling to just wallow in this melodic sway of rhythms to the sound of a Russian voice that suddenly turns devilish. This is powerful and will shake you to the core.

Odradek Room

River

A very melancholic rhythm plods evenly to an intense beat with a sampled array of mixed voices that join in the immense fluctuation of tempo and give it a jumbled intrigue, whilst the guitar holds a steady melody until it builds to one of the most powerful crescendos I have ever heard!  Even the heart can’t beat as quickly as this! A softer vocal harmony blends into the swell of rhythms and the tempo drops like a pebble in a river forcing its ripples to spiral into oblivion.

Cold Light

A shrill clanking emerges with a more subsonic sombre of heavy beats. It sounds cumbersome as it moves slowly – the beast that is Odradek is showing his true colours and playing tricks to his surrounding audience of intense aura, mockingly terrifying the vocals scream in anguish and then return to a more inherent tone to a build-up of highly intense beats that suddenly slow and diminish.

To Sum up:

This E.P will paint some crazy images in your mind once you get to know Ordarek! Carving and creating a being from musical notes and building rhythms that turn a surreal world into a unique encounter. Compulsive tracks each one memorable in their own way have come together on one E.P.  If you read The Metamorphosis or Odradek Room by Franz Kafka, this album will simply come to life! Outstanding and completely innovative, and must be savoured with relish!

The Book of Violence

Accentuating and fluctuating synths bubble under the thickening rhythms twisting and gnarling their way through the track creating a superb array of whipped up and varying burn! Intense and expressive it burrows furiously into the aural and is host to a memorable track.

The Book of Violence Aesthetic Remix

Emotive and yet again varying, offering great dance rhythms that in turn does more than scratch the skin on the flailing limbs bringing great charisma into the track. Interesting and melodic too in abundance!

  

The Book of Violence Code 64 Remix

I am so glad that after a shaky start of not being able to get this track to play it has now been rectified and I can savor this in all its melodic glory. It is hypnotic, it’s unusual, and it’s very different from the other three tracks. This is most definitely, superb! It holds a wave of smooth synth and muted vocals that commands the body to follow the notes in succession – so loving this to the very core of my being! I suppose you could call me a Freak Angel and if you did I would be more than happy!

The Book of Violence Psionic Remix

A rather sophisticated remix creating a somber mood at the forefront of the track but then it explodes into a mass of gurgling rhythms that pulsate ferociously. The driving energy exudes with a demonic gruff vocal entourage that is backed up by a female vocal which in turn balances the track to the extreme and offers a great deal of expression and emotion.

To Sum up:

One mouth-watering E.P with driving varying rhythms of sophistication that burrow deep into the membrane with hypnotic ambiance and a lot of gnarly charisma. It is certainly one to buy for its energetic portrayal of industrial core that goes way deeper than just the core. Guaranteed to make you sweat blood!!
