The faces of darkness - Hercyn

Dust

Is not dissimilar to Magda the single in that it gives off an air of supremacy in its sombre tones. However the vocals are not grisly but deep and resonating. It ambles along in an atmospheric bubble, fuelled by sharp imagination and uniqueness.

Of Ruins

Offers up a solid drum beat that signifies the beginning of the track and then it simply plums into atmospheric strings, taking a leap of faith into swirl of rebellious melodic prowess and vocally scathing the ears reap their rewards as the track heavily engages.

Storm before the Flood

Nudging distinctly into the familiar territory of a black magic world the next track explodes into an emotive bouncing that shows significant imagination. Potent with crippling seething vocals that moulds themselves perfectly into far reaching corners of the song.

Ages

Takes the levels down a few notches and produces a classical array of strings that take you away from the familiarity of atmospheric black metal and opens the door to a kinder immersion. It flows with generous melody and contrast.

Summary:

This is an outstanding EP in the sense it holds all the right notes for being compelling and edgy, while the final track offers an insight into the light leaving behind that dark sediment and swapping it with a warm glow. Calming and nurturing it allows the listener into a new world and allows them to explore fully a softer side to the band.

The seething rawness that are the other three tracks of course are welcome but carved into each of them is that bleak landscape and screeching vocal lure that excites and compels in true black metal form.

It is all you need to settle in for the night – inventive, creative and driven, it is worth a listen in order to sink into the rich tapestry that has been resurrected within the strings alone but the whole thing together creates a perpetual sound of epic.

Biography:

Mystic. Earthen. Psychedelic vision. A compelling tapestry. A resonant journey.

Hercyn formed in 2010 as a personal folk conclave to explore deep, dark and epic music between friends Ernest and Michael.

The acoustic timbres explored visions of death, forests and esoteric space all while living under the shadow of urbanism. As time progressed, the duo realized they needed to expand their sonic visions if they were to continue to fuel their desire to compose epic songs. Overdriven guitars, mossy synths, and thundering drums were added to create a live constellation of what is present day Hercyn channelling the desire for a world beyond our own.

The fall of 2013 saw the DIY release of Magda, the 24 minute epic with mournful and sombre rises and atmospheric decays. Juxtaposed next to the electric and dense Magda was the B-side (2014) chamber version of Magda feature prominent acoustics, mandolin and violin. 2014 continues with the late summer release of All This Suffering Is Not Enough - a split release with Brooklyn doom act Thera Roya. The darkness grows for Hercyn.

This is a very light and airy composition that allows for taking in a deep breath and floating on a journey as outlined by Hercyn.

The guitars work extremely well and offer up a healthy and compelling scene of surround epicness. What brings you to earth with a bang are the grisly rousing vocal that plunges the ears into a forcibly black endeavour. The rhythms emerge triumphant and slick and continue to guide you on this favourable journey of edginess into a parallel universe.

Penetrating beats harbour an awkward but provocative slur as they raise the bar and offer up strong melody be it of bleakness – it is however rapturous and fast.

There is no escaping the black from which the unbridled passion flows and takes a grip of the situation that is unfolding.

Although the composition is black its alternative roots grow steadily and give out haunting atmospheric lures, coaxing the ears into submission in an endeavour to succeed.

Although this piece of creativity is now three years old – it has not aged and maintained its dignity!

Its many rhythms and beats twist and turn into a melee of resonating grandeur. So it can be described in one word as ‘Epic!’ and in true Black Metal fashion it lasts a good twenty-four minutes, so there is no doubt it will allow you to fully engage and immerse all your earthy emotions in one fell swoop as the resonating menagerie of sounds fade into the distance.
