First of all
this was a Charity gig in aid of the PDSA
and I would not have missed it for the world. All the bands who played, Ian the
sound tech, the bar staff and everyone who attended were superb and made the
night one to remember. Apologies to Manufracture,
Intracranial Hypertension and Blo
Blak as I couldn’t get down to see you guys play before 7pm.

Never seen OUTLIVE before and just arrived in time
to see them set up and play. Really superb set these guys just flung themselves
into their performance and then some!
Very little is
actually known about this band, but they really came together and produced a superb
set. The sound was really good and the tracks were punchy and carried a certain
heaviness that had the head moving and the feet tapping.
A particular
favourite was “Protect ya Neck” the vibrations actually made bottles fall of
the ledge at the side of the stage! The vocal content was extremely punky and
hard hitting. Jake prowled around the floor whilst the rest of the band stood
firm under a haze of bright lights.
I really
enjoyed watching these guys and always good to witness a band I have never seen
live before. Each track was hardcore, laced with punk elements and to the
extreme, but nothing I wouldn’t expect from a Dr Aids event!

In the band’s
own words, “If you like your thrash fast and furious with songs about action
heroes and beer, look no further! With massive influence from old school thrash
bands such as Annihilator, Kreator, Testament, Slayer and Megadeth, stages are
sure to get ripped apart.” And rip you apart they did.
Newly formed
band Ramraid born out of the ashes
of the infamous Horrorcaused hit the stage next – no they actually melted it!
This was the band’s first gig – not that you could tell as they played superbly
well. No sign of nerves and yet three of the members are still only in their
teens to early 20’s absolutely incredible!
Dom the band’s
drummer did a drum solo which blew me away, after Joe explained they were going
to waste a bit of time. Normally drum solos can be a tad boring but this was
immense and didn’t go on too long but just enough to keep you interested. Yet speaking
to Dom afterwards he was quite shy and modest about his achievements – no idea
why though?
Someone shouted
to Joe what’s the track about and Joe said “it can be anything you want it to
be it doesn’t have any words” It did but according to Joe he forgot them, still
we were none the wiser as the chords just melted into an extreme metal
entourage.
Ben’s guitar
just smacked of professionalism every inch of the way and coupled with Joe’s
rhythmic guitar the tracks just burst into an explosion of angry and aggressive
tones that shook Format to the core!
Amazing first
gig for this foursome – can’t wait to hear more from this band. Check out the link above to hear more from

Rectal Implosion was up next and definitely the
“fastest thing on four legs” as the band describes themselves as.
Just two guys
graced the tiny stage at the Format and made enough noise for twenty bands with
their unique approach to their death/grind set.
I liked the
fact that the drummer sung on the tracks or rather “growled” Each time I looked
up I expected to see the guitarist growling and was surprised each time
although the hair led to a few orgasms had to be said, but anyone who knows me
know I admire the hair and always will do – it is a big part of metal for me
and Jamie had enough hair for everyone. :D
Again superb
set with some amazing titles such as “Arse Shoveler” and “Tranny Magnet” Wurzelz
gave a description of each of the tracks in turn telling the hungry crowd what
was about to descend on them which I thought was a nice touch.
Rectal Implosion was as their name suggested and
slammed out some amazing tracks that really burned deep into the skull. Usually
you can tell what a band sounds like just by the name and these two guys were
no exception to that rule – here they got down and dirty and produced such an
amazing set from start to finish with nothing left to the imagination – it does
what it says on the tin in the most extreme way.
I urge you to
check out this duo if you love death/grind you can’t fail to be impressed and
then some.

Dr Aids –

Well what can I
say about this performance? Except to say – this is Dr Aids - expect the unexpected!
First of all
after one of Dr Aids many tracks played on the night, Piggy had the microphone
in his hand and his mobile in the other and apparently he led us to believe
that his Mrs had called and he was saying “Yes hun I did do the dishes but I am
in the middle of a gig” “Yes love you too!” The crowd were in hysterics at his
antics in true Piggy style we all know and love.
The bands 16
strong set list seemed to last about 10 minutes the time just disintegrated but
within that space of time the band gave a full uncompromising and compelling
stage performance possible. I don’t think Agzy forgot any of the words despite
the usual commotion at a Dr Aids gig and not forgetting the Stella of course!
Shit Eating Freak
was superbly executed and just one of my favourite tracks but saying that I
just love Dr Aids for their
originality and their “don’t give a f*** attitude. They just tell it like it is and this gig was no exception.
If you have not
experienced the antics of Dr Aids
then I suggest you get off your backsides and partake in some action. You can
never quite be sure what is about to happen which is typical of Dr Aids, but one thing is for sure I
doubt the band will be able to turn the notches up any higher – they are just amazing to the end and gained so much respect from all who witness their lively and uncompromising antics on stage - and off!

The Wanky’s –

Punk
Very punk is
the only way to describe The Wanky’s. Dr Wanky’s Mark was impressive with his
blond hair, red wispy beard and facial piercings. The sound that emanated from
the band just transported me back to Sex Pistol days and if my feet hadn’t have
been so sore I would have been pogoing down at the front.
Poundland the
band’s first track was amazing. Hard to imagine singing about a place nobody
really thinks about unless visiting it, but these guys made it sound like
something amazing.
Mark (or Dr
Wanky as he is known to his mates) has an Australian/South African accent which
is different to say the least and comes across on his vocal onslaught giving
the tracks a very unusual sound.
I can see why
Agzy loves this band. They are so down his street, and are in the middle of a
very busy schedule but took time out to do this benefit gig for the PDSA but sadly not everyone felt the
same way. A handful of people made their
way down into the murky depths leading to a portal to witness this awesome punk
creation. But for the ones not doing so – well they missed a great band...
shame on you!
Fast and
furious the tracks kept coming and the few who were there clearly appreciative
of the bands efforts me included and very different to the norm it had to be
said.
The Punk
Revolution ain’t dead it is only just beginning. Do try and catch them on their tour because
they are great live!

Founded in 2008 I have watched Bludvera
grow since seeing them live two years ago at the Zanzibar and said to Scott then
that they would go places and after winning a place at Bloodstock last year was
not really surprised.
It took me an
awful long time to get into the thrash movement and finally in doing so I have
now found myself totally hooked on it. Scott has an amazing vocal range and the
expressions on his face, as he belts out some amazing lyrics is something to
behold. Nobody sings like Scott, he has his own unique vocal tone and it cannot
be compared to other vocalists.
The second
track Powerhouse just exploded with Scott and the guys really giving the Format
a run for its money. The vibes literally were electric as the guitars worked up
to some amazing crescendos whilst Baz the drummer kicked out some great blast
beats.
The crowd were
really hooked as each chord struck and each blast beat became apparent. This is
Bludvera live!
I was indeed
wondering if the guys would play Total Recall and when the last track was upon
us Scott announced “The next track is Total Recall!” that put more than a smile
on my face and I was really enjoying hearing everyone sing in unison - A great
end to such a superb night.

To sum up – it
was a great mix of bands, from Punk Thrash and Death Grind. The crowd were amazing
and got into the groove – well the few that bothered to turn up that is. Great
seeing old faces and meeting new ones like Ganikah Brown, Ben Gannon and Bill
McKee (despite the hard time I give him on Facebook!) and Danny Hell Hughes,
(from Gods of War) Kabir D’Silva, John, Krag Wilkinson, Pete Byrne, Yeardo and
Steve Churchill (from Horsebastard) All really
wonderful people that gave special memories to such a brilliant event.
Ian the sound
tech really did a great job on the evening’s events as did Sal (from Whiplash) and
Alison with their help on the door and Sal’s cakes so good they went before I
knew they were selling any (I will get to try to grab a piece one day!) and
they made about 30.00 towards the PDSA
total – Great Job Sal. Thanks to the barman who actually gave me an orange
juice on the house and offered me another one later which I actually declined.
Now armed with
a new camera I can finally take better shots of the bands and don’t have to
rely on others to take some good pics which is an achievement for me. All in all this was an amazing event that in
my opinion as well as everyone else’s it should be repeated.
Well done to
everyone’s efforts that made this a night to remember! The guys raised in excess of 300.00 - Brilliant effort! bring on the next one!
