Before The Sunshine

A nice earthy feel to this melodic swathe of eerie and intense piece of music. Nøemi’s vocals are really superb, and the music accompanying it holds a natural flavour of jagged synth that add a good rawness to the whole sound. It flows with ease and reaches the peak of perfection providing a good strong balance.

Collide

With an extreme bounce of rhythm, collective melodies and great vocals that shows a good diverse range, this track simply sizzles! The synth holds plenty of fertile notes that grow into stupendous melodies and the drumming is harsh and adds a good punchy kick to the track.

White Me in Black me out

The title track to the E.P offers a restrained vocal and again some jagged little synth notes that build into a fiery immense and pleasurable track. The balance is just perfect and befitting for a title track.

Tribes of the Future

This one explores some good sampling and lavish rhythms that turn heavy although Nøemi’s voice compensates superbly well and becomes more forceful in output. A really engrossing track with a good meaty bass hook and plenty of variety.

Alkaline Twins

An ambient start that turns more vibrant as it furthers and takes on different paths of encompassing and delightful rhythms making it an incredible mind journey.

Electric Night

Ambient and boasts a hard edge of fueled passionate melody and encapsulating rhythm with the music perfectly complimenting Nøemi’s vocal entourage and impossible not to be moved by the intensity surrounding the track.

Rid Of Me

Raindrop like synth sounds reign down delicately to a more soft edged vocal that is pumped full of ambient haunting melody. The lilting tones of her voice mould effortlessly to the superb sound.  It holds an urgency that is hard to ignore and offers a bittersweet flavour to what is a brilliant track.

Shake

Punchy and uplifting, this builds into a haunting and ambient melody ridden track with a whispered soft vocal. Its beats however, are harsher and consistent with the fuelled and passionate synth notes and simply bathed in a cool refreshing bass line.

Utopia

A run of pleasant notes scale new heights amid a sparse drumming in a heartbeat rhythm and a shrill vocal, further on in the track it houses some amazing strange sounds and goes on to create a haunting melody of effective eeriness.

Hi-Tech Medusa

Very bubble and squeak, the harshness is complimented with a hypnotic beat and a sinewy vocal.  Robotic and mechanical in stance building to a mad frenzy of compelling jaunty madness with catchiness stamped all over it! Superb!

Lost In Translation

Pumping, jagged edgy rhythms swell and sink amid a vocal that occasionally lilts and underpins the whole track giving it a solid foundation. A very powerful piece of music that holds incredible bite.

To Sum up:

Vocally superb it has to be said.  The music is compelling and engrossing, shows tremendous diversity and edge.  Undeniably well executed and will grab your attention on first hearing with everything interweaving and as a result brings you a very entertaining listen. The combinations twist and turn so there are always plenty of little surprises along the way. This is sure to find favour with the Goth/Electro rock fans out there and probably others of an EBM nature too.

“After the very straight and hammering Aggrotech debut-album "Come out and Play", Swedish artist Fredrik Croona shows with this new exclusive 6-track E.P that CYNICAL EXISTENCE is more than a dance floor hitting machine.  "Beholder" indeed bridges the upbeat approach of the band with a stronger focus on atmospheres and vocal diversity. Songs like the lingering "Wake up Call" or the darker "Mardröm" (with Swedish lyrics!) will not deny it! Founded on the 31^st December 2011 Cynical Existence screamed their way into the world of dark Elektro and harsh EBM and never looked back! Slowly beginning to crawl and now two years on, up on their feet and responsible for feeding the entire population of EBM/Industrial freaks.  This savagery comes at a price and that price is your soul as the music commands you every step of the way, you just have to give up control to Cynical Existence because they demand it and your body craves it! Plus Steve Alton is part of this band (who is now also with the awesome System:FX) so it was a foregone conclusion that this was going to be superb creation even before listening, and after listening you know you were right!

The Mindless-Filth

The degree of mega production on this track will certainly have people clambering for the dance floor. The forceful rhythms sit well and allow the body to move – and that is because it has no choice! How this band dream up their concepts and make something as perfect as this I do not know? but one thing is for sure it’s catchy and balances indulgent with supreme structures of melodic approach, shifting twitches and complex rhythmic sway.

Mardrom - Meaning Nightmare

Time to brush up on the Swedish! With amazing aesthetic qualities, hammering melodies and rasping vocals in Swedish this is one killer track and it simply implies that Cynical Existence are diverse and innovative in their field or it could just mean that they have a Swedish vocalist!

Hail to the King Baby

This track has a real obscure flavour, and the pumping little flurry of synth amid a thunderous constantly edgy beat is just exquisite. Pulsating with vibrancy it hypnotises the body into moving to its jerky and jagged little fluctuations with ease – “Get back to work you slackers!”

The beginning of the end

An empty knocking begins and then a nice distorted array of gut wrenching throbbing rhythms pummel through the speaker with a constant and mechanical ambiance. It will vocally throttle you with an impressive harshness. Rich in dark melody and adding in further pulsating beats that embellish the aural and literally leave you bathing in its high velocity sound.

Draining me feat. Freaky Mind

Sampled voice and incidental sounds crack through the aural cavity like a sledgehammer. Beautiful swathes of melody just encapsulate you as you fall deeper into a rhythmic trance and you just won’t be able to resist its mouth-watering qualities – it will leave you salivating like a thirsty animal on a hot summer’s day! One fantastic track!

Wake Up Call

The music is dark, and mesmerising with a degree of deliberate ambiance, however, I am not keen on the vocal arrangement as it sounds like a bit of a dirge, although the creepy whispering really adds a nice touch to the combination, but I think overall this track lingers a little too long, I want to get back on the dance floor!

To Sum up:

An absolutely amazing E.P with the exception of the final track.  Although you cannot say the band haven’t shown some strong diversity in their music but it would have been nice to have finished on a high note and not a low one. However, there is an awful lot of punishing rhythms that give a pulsating tingle down the backbone, swathed in ambiance and melodic wash so it is certainly an E.P that will get a lot of plays whilst I work out my latest dance moves!

Brazilian masters of metal from 2006 have now released their 10 track album entitled 'The Gift of Death' and they are out for blood - yours!

The cover is grainy and depicts a battle scene of ferocious soldiers unmercifully going to war and seeking out the weak enemy armed with spears and shields in their attempt to conquer and very apt for the title of the CD “The Gift of Death!”

Intro

A very serious and sophisticated intro that immediately begs the question – are you ready for this?

Codex Gigas

Superb melodic sway immediately has your attention. This is how traditional metal should sound, with lashings of cymbals, copious drumming and high voltage riffs all contained in a neat little melodic box. It has that medieval feel about it which offers something different. The vocal is strong and commanding and blends in well with the cacophony of sound produced by the rest of the band.

Spirit of the Death

Chugging and riff excellent, the vocals soar with a lot of diversity and have an operatic feel to them. I think the band is inspired by Maiden, they incorporate high energy levels, charged guitar riffs and good old heavy metal but with a certain bite and passion.

Medieval Land

This track immediately brings to mind a medieval battle of old, its charging regimented drum beat plods in a regimented form and the vocals are scathing and raw. It holds a great deal of melodic stance as it builds to a fever pitch with rapturous riffing – the tapping of cymbals reminds me of swash buckling swords - let the battle commence!

Burning the Holy Gates

Power and speed metal here we come! The driving frenzy of this track alone is stupendous, although the vocals sound slightly off key here which dampens the ardour somewhat, but the drumming is immense and sweeps you up into its feverish clutches and the cackling laugh adds that special touch.

Hate of Dogmas

The fires burn fiercely to a rampaging whisper of vocal and drums that will wake the dead. It holds an atmospheric gathering of darkness and yet carries a superb shrill pitched vocal. – Superb!

Asgard

This has melodic sway in abundance and then furthers into a raucous frenzy of kick beats and high level vocal giving the listener a huge wave of metal to ride upon. This is a beast of brute force and melodic passages. Again tremendous.

The Signal

The old school rhythms again apparent and domineering with tremendous savage vocal brings life to this track. The sound effects are mesmerizing – the cannon’s explode in time to the death defying sounds that protrude from the shaking speakers in true metal form and bombard the senses nicely!

Speed Metal Attack

Classic track! Its damming splendor exudes a ferocity of malice contained within the riffing, whilst the vocal although clean has its gnarly moments and the drumming never loosens its ever tightening grip to a hard edged bass hook, packed with venomous melody and attack they do!

Old School Avenger

A slower paced track emerges and offers a good vocal range from gnarly to shrill pitched raucous screams, but somehow the approach to this track is slightly lessened in intensity as it seems to meander most of the time, but the highlight is the superb highly charged and ferocious guitar that suddenly emerges towards the end of the track.

To Sum up:

A stunning album containing a great vocal range and stupendous guitar giving the listener a ride back into the past but the band have put their own stamp onto the mix. This album has many quirky features from operatic vocal and raspy whispers to high octane levels of aggression encapsulated by some well-produced sound effects and have not left anything out although on ‘Burning the Holy Gates’ the vocals does have an ‘off key’ moment. But overall a brilliant album that contains a lot of bite, and energy and most definitely get the blood pumping!! With a lot of ground covered Clenched Fist are definitely a force to be reckoned with.

“Svaritra Manyu looked for like-minded musicians after writing a bunch of demos in 2011. After meeting Alex Eve and then Giuseppe Pucciarelli the guys practiced the songs and got Andrzej Lupa on the drums to play their first gig at the Underworld Camden on 27th September 2012.

The band recorded 4 songs for their debut E.P Hammer Rage in November 2012 and launched it at the O2 Academy Islington on the 28th March 2013 and is now gearing up for more and more gigs that they are always up for playing!”

A Fit of Thrash

It is evident from the beginning of this E.P that this is technically superb musically although the vocals are very weak in comparison and slightly off key which is rather frustrating.  There does not seem to be any weight behind them to carry the superb sound of the band.

Escape the Killers Spree

A siren wails ominously and a slow drum beat ushers forth but it takes a little while to get going. The guitar creeps forward with a nice chug effect, but sadly again the vocals are thin and do not hold enough zest so this track is a little dull and uninteresting.

Hammer Rage

The title track Hammer Rage starts off with a good pummeling and a fast constant chug however although the band succeed in creating a reasonable intensity with some superb playing by Svaritra and Guiseppe, none the less a bit disappointing vocal wise yet again.

Run & Hide

The sound of gun fire and then the menacing approach of an explosion of rhythms fire up.  It does hold quite a bit of melody but the vocals definitely need to be stronger in order to make a lasting impression. Musically malicious with the guitars working well with the drumming and a nice strong bass hook. Discounting the vocal this is my favourite track on the E.P.

To Sum up:

Slightly disappointing with the thin vocals that tend to spoil the overall effect of the mighty lashings of rhythms and riffs contained within the track.  Most definitely needs a much more powerful vocal to fully bring out the tremendous musical highlights.

Maybe, the band should re think the vocals and draft someone else into the band to take over the job and see where that takes them, as they do have a good sound to build upon.

Mechanical Swan is a life purpose for a group of musicians who strongly wanted to combine the power of Hard Rock and Heavy metal with the elegance of an orchestra and the addictive grooves of Electronic music. And ‘Black Dawn Romance’, their highly addictive debut album, goes above and beyond their call of duty, passage after passage. The band were able to create a unique and complex sound made of beautiful melodies, classy arrangements and meaningful lyrics, dealing with the whole spectrum of human emotions: love, hate, memories and passions. Also included in the album is a truly emotional cover version of Depeche Mode’s ‘In Your Room’”

This album to me sounded interesting as I wanted to hear what heavy metal sounded like with an orchestra incorporating electronic – so we shall see!

No more tears to Cry

So far so good, those simple melodic keyboard notes come fluctuating into existence, this is fantastic. Clean but powerful vocals and a tempered drum beat surround a beautiful balanced sound although so far it is not metal at all, but the band can be forgiven as it is very different – saying that there is a superb guitar solo that can be classed as metal and the driving surge is phenomenal.

Memories

Sparse keys give the track that urgent feel amid a strong drum beat and bass hook that has kick.  The harmonies are great too. It possesses great balance that benefits the track tremendously. I am loving this a lot.

Human

Beautifully executed with a swirling mesmerising sound of orchestral splendour and a haunting vocal. It offers some really outstanding build ups and even it’s more melancholic moments are intense. A very cleverly written track that offers subtlety and variation in abundance.

Tear me down

Nice driving rhythms of powerful beats and intricate synth amid a more harsh vocal showing again superb diversity. Laced with fire and passion this holds so much more.  A great melodical wash of orchestral charm with a great metal guitar, this is superbly unique.

Mechanical Swan

Emerald Bird

An emotional start with heavier keys and a powerful rhythmic intrigue that smooth’s itself out into a duel vocal one of them being female but it adds to the beauty and urgency of the track. It is slightly more commercial than previous but it can’t be ignored.

If you...

A ballad with a difference as the acoustic guitar strings mould themselves around a clean vocal and the only track that doesn’t seem to hold a prominent synth sound. It is again subtle and varied with huge melodies and a fantastic guitar solo. Beautiful track indeed.

In your Room

Bubbling rhythm of synth with again a sparse key section and a velvet vocal of sumptuousness – this is so varied and interesting. A contrast of incidental noises and building drums with solid bass lines comes into the frame and literally paints pictures with words and sounds of orchestral beauty. My favourite track without a doubt! So will just rotate this one for a bit longer!

My Lonely Life

An intriguing array of synth noises incorporating a swathe of sumptuous melodic rhythms with haunting vocal ensemble.  Very reminiscent of Depeche Mode. Further on in the track it becomes more urgent as the run up to its final crescendos embark on orchestral wonders finishing the way it started with an array of synth noises – another brilliant track.

Black Dawn

Crazy jangled synth sounds with a stark flavour of passion. Ambiance by the bucket load, its rhythms and beats encompass you with feverish qualities. A harsher vocal pushes forth but the track does not lose its amazing orchestral oomph and houses vehement power in its diversity very pleasing to the ears.

To Sum up:

I can honestly say, hand on heart, that this is one of the most interesting, varied and diverse albums I have heard in a long time. It offers passion and emotion from every note in its well-tuned body. The urgency is extreme and begs you to listen.  Although there are influences of Depeche Mode this does not take away from its beauty but gives it a guide line. It contains melancholic moments steeped in a huge orchestral range of balanced harmonies and amazing metal guitar solos – I have loved every minute of this album and no doubt will be giving it a few more spins, but this is a really powerful blend of music and really needs your attention.

In a nutshell this album is like the listener taking a stroll around a green and luscious countryside in the height of summer as opposed to a dirty, polluted city in the depths of winter!

It probably won’t appeal to the all-out metal head unless they are broad minded but to a die hard rock fan this will most definitely appeal.  It does have its commercial stance however, it is redeemed because of the huge diversity contained in each of their well thought out and creative tracks. Amazing album!

“LANTERN was formed in summer 2007 by Cruciatus, in the eve of Cacodaemon's death. The line-up changes necessary for Cruciatus' work to proceed didn't leave the moniker Cacodaemon rights to exist under even a slightly different sound. Thus LANTERN barged in as a completely new entity, risen from the shambles of an elder beast.

An old friend, namely Necrophilos swore fealty to the group after the very birth of LANTERN, and the recordings of "Virgin Taste of Damnation" took place, with the band exploring its true form as a two-piece, trying their sound during numerous days spent at the rehearsal place. The debut material received very positive feedback and shall be rerecorded for future releases. The good word also inspired LANTERN to participate in "Metal on Metal III: Third Warning of the Storms" compilation with the song "Cauldron of Souls", appearing among some of Finland's top underground black metal acts.

In mid-2009 the horde returned to the studio to capture 5 new songs that came to form the “Doom-scrawls” sessions, later on captured by Internecion Productions (NZ) to be released on CD, titled as "Subterranean Effulgence". The lyrical theme journeys unto death and undeath, mysticism of existence and afterlife – and all that is hidden in between. The musical part was by far the best effort by the band – in composition, production and atmosphere”

The bands lyrical entourage is mainly about hell, evil, and death, I don’t know about you but liking black/death metal as I do, this is not a bad place start but nothing different, however it works!  The album is already making waves and receiving a lot of interest in the run up to its release in June.

Rites of Descent

The album kicks off with a barrage of heavy rhythms and a nice gnarly growl which is washed down by melodic black metal incorporating some heavy chord work. Great high energy but executed with that bone crushing black flavour.  I can see why people love this – it’s raw and punishingly brutal.

Revenant

Quite an early Sabbath feel with an urgent voice surrounded by various surging guitars and a suitable amount of melodic swathe. Vocally ambient with driving feverish rhythms that really pulverise with great abandon. A majestic run of riffs really gives the track a nice kick too. Its slow moments are just pumped with fuel ingested depravity.

Entrenching Presences

Moody and encapsulating it immediately sends that welcome chill down the backbone and the gruff superb growls add to the already building crescendos of chaotic power. A frenzied mix of guitars and drums issues forth and offers really heavy textures giving it a profound ambiance.

Manifesting Shambolic Aura

Going through the infinite spectrum of scales this track literally swipes everything aside in its bid to get to its climax. Nothing is spared! Vocally huge growled to a distorted array of frenzied rhythms and sonic beats and perhaps not the best track to listen to when one has a headache! Although it may take your mind off the pain.

Lantern

Demons in my Room

Very interesting title conjuring up all sorts of images of beasties and shit like that! The vocal is spoken rather than sung and sounding as evil as you would expect it to.  Quite an intricate track of layered and textured rhythms that interlock as the vocal becomes more damming and intense. Superb track!

Below

The title track to the album, has copious amounts of intrigue building right from the start.  The heavy riffs plummet giving it that eerie sound of ominous foreboding and then trails off.

From the Ruins

The exact opposite to the last track this is fast, frenzied and down-right brutal. The vocal scathing and raw propels out more evil ferocious growls with a building riffage to back it up and the drumming is immense as it is solid and powerful.

To Sum up:

A very subtle album that is varied and gives the listener a good head workout with manic moments of heavy guitar and strong intense vocal growling – that reveals a lot more with every listen.

“IMPRECATION decided to part ways in 1998. In 2002, Ruben, Phil, Wes and Dave reunite for IMPRECATION to play the “Infernal Horde of Manifestation” Fest in Houston, Texas. Bass player, Mark Beecher, was not available to play in this event. The show was recorded live and released on cassette, which successfully sold 100 tapes. .... Now years later, IMPRECATION returned again and worked on releasing new material releasing 2 songs in 2009.

Blood Dominion

I think it is thundering, no sorry it’s just Imprecation doing what comes naturally to them. Stupendous growls run amok in a feverish frenzy of evil amid a density of drum beats fired up with a surging guitar, sounding good on all levels with a hypnotic rhythm offering a good balance to this track.

From beyond the fiery Temple

Quite doom laden and slow in delivery building tempestuously into a huge musical melodic cacophony. Ultimately powerful with bombastic vocal and a superb bit of guitar work.

Hosanna Ex Inferis

Very heavy guitar opens this track with another consistent doom effect of disturbing vibrations but great melodic wash that lifts the mood somewhat. Fascinating and intense propelling you to a high peak with disgruntled vocal - a good touch!

Angel of Salvation’s Doom

Executing some great rhythms and a huge gurgle of growls it is a winner. Nice and heavy with abrasive vocals will always have a pull for me.  This is driven with sheer vengeance and creates a clear path of unbridled passion. The guitar literally neighs like a wild horse adding great depth to the track.

The Coils of Eden

A short respite from the brutal? We shall see as the eerie ambient keyboard comes into view amid a building drum beat and an unusual twist of raucous guitar as it chugs with a venomous bite and adds serious variation. The horse is back frantically neighing in appreciation to the saturation of dark and foreboding rapturous delights.

Chapel of Rotting Flesh

Atmospheric disturbance of the heavy doom laden kind with gnarly growls that feed the high velocity sounds be them tempered and deliberate. The structure of the track is creeping and engaging with venomous twists so quite a unique mix with a good chug and startling melody.

Rancid Blood

The riffs literally pour like congealed blood on a cold slab of cold rhythms iced to perfection with gnarly vocals entwining above and beyond the complacent beats, moulding the track with an encapsulating expression.

Of the Black Earth

The feverish tension builds be it slow but plods on with a doom laden feel, resulting in a low key tempo, however the riffs give it that engaging tone cultivating a certain rawness with lots of visceral prowess.

Carrion winds of Golgotha

A sophisticated track that oozes a symphonic keyboard amid the sound of thunder. The keys rolling like waves washing up on a deserted shore. Stark and resounding, the listener waits with baited breath for the fireworks to start, but only clanking and keyboard can be heard amid more thunder, so the moment has been lost in time forever.

To Sum up:

Overall not a bad album but can feel a little bit ‘samey’ in places, although the swelling rhythms and deep gruff vocal adds to the ambiance and there are higher more up tempo moments deep within its body of doom and even flourishes on a lot of occasions giving the listener a slight dose of variation, especially the squealing raucous guitars, although I found more blackened doom moments rather than death metal moments to be had here, not that, it is a bad thing far from it, but slightly confusing as the genre states Death Metal.

However it has its moments of ‘gory’ and offers straightforward dark growls with ambiance, but I feel the band should release the throttle and let rip totally in order to keep the album up to full speed rather than at half cock, but none the less a good listen.
