“Lucky Funeral is a four piece band based in
Athens – Greece, unleashed in the middle of 2007 and since then bonded over a
shared musical vision. The band’s music resides somewhere between Rock &
Metal, fuelled by many progressive, sludge and Space Rock features, combined
with extreme sounds. Recently they released
their 3rd studio album, named “Find your
Soul in Beautiful Lunatics” on their own label, Lychnopolis Records”
The Awakening
With an ambient
festering this menagerie of sound blossoms but is sadly only a filler track. I
feel the band could have made more use of this and turned it into something
momentous, but it may be something they could build on in the future.
Souls in the
Waiting Room
Fulfilling
their promise the band combine a rapturous space rock sound with some hard rock
vocals that incorporate harsh growls and build up to a swathe of fiery rhythms
and samples. The harmonies are very psychedelic but never lose their impact on
the hard rock edge the band portrays. Packed full of intrigue and ambiance and a
very powerful track to behold.
We can see the
sun
This track
powers to light with an extreme urgency and rampages with a brooding malevolence
– its slower moments are still gnarled and captivating although the vocals do
sound slightly off key in places.
In
Nice ambient array
of strings and a solid thumping beat evolves and then a furious wind is heard –
yes another filler track that does not really seem to fill much purpose.
The
Neighbourhood of Beautiful Lunatics
The incidental
plinking noises amid a strenuous beat is a welcome sound. It does slow
considerably and turns a bit mainstream at that point, but it then quickens and
turns into a gnarly array of hardening tempestuous searing, only to return to
its melancholic ramblings and the moment is sadly lost.
Mnemosyne
Plays hosts to
a monumental drum beat and harsh resonating strings which are right up my
street. This is more like it! Full on feisty passion and raw emotion with dream
like space rock attributes – love it!
Lethe
The eerie whistling
begins and a wind tunnel effect of atmospherics swells with garbled incoherent
voices in contrast to a shrill guitar riff and rambling beats that together
deliver a strong array of invigorating passion and is a good instrumental.
Colourful
Balloons in Groove
A great title
for a track it has to be said! This houses some resonating riffs but the vocal
struggles a bit to a monotone rhythm, but you never know it could grow on me,
however, not yet!
Let me show you
how to love
Precise and
fiery guitar riffs with strong bass hook and immense beats this is quite an intense
listen. The space theme is continued and
swaggers with plenty of rhythm and a good vocal that spits venom and is a good
rousing track that bristles with irresistible content and weaves a superb
confrontational groove.
Tantalus is
still alive
Capturing a
heavy and bulging rhythmic sound and superb grazing aggressive vocal that also
hosts a clean vocal – it is clearly not short of anything, that goes to make up
a very interesting track and literally stalks the senses with haunting shrill harmonies
adding an edge leaving a resounding mark.
Chorus
A more sombre
moment to be had here as its ambiance and contrasting shrill stringed
arrangement takes hold and gives out a sophisticated feel. A foreign voice
sample pipes up, the music never loosens its mesmerising grip and swirls around
touching on an enticing presence.
The Man who...
To finish -
this track swaggers under the weight of peculiar angled rhythms and a strong
rock vocal that throws out a welcome listen. Drenched in melodic swathe and crisp
riffs with no labouring moments just in your face punchy beats.
To Sum up:
In places the
band sound like early Hawkwind on some weird kind of mind bending drug. However
‘Lucky Funeral’ are a lot more
diverse than Hawkwind and incorporate some superb samples, incidental sounds
and heavy grooves. I am not sure if it is what I would throw on to listen to at
the drop of a hat though, but cannot dismiss them altogether. Their passion is in abundance with sinewy
riffs and sonic persuasions, although for some people this may be a bit too
much in one hit. I love the space rock theme and some, not all of the
progressive sludge elements this album contains, however I have enjoyed
listening to most of the tracks. But in
my humble opinion guys; forget the filler track ‘In’ and build on ‘The
Awakening’ that indeed has a lot of promise.
