The evening took quite an unexpected turn – not thinking I would be
at the Lomax watching any bands let alone bands I wouldn’t normally listen to
and feeling rather on edge at the thought of what I was about to witness, but
the element of surprise here was just great!
Love Music Promotions are holding gigs every Thursday night at the
Lomax.
The Lomax stage was awash with orange prison shirts baring the name
Alcatraz – Psycho Ward, which for all those like myself had no idea who or
what the band called themselves, I assumed the name of the band was Alcatraz,
but that was soon put right when Dogstar Rose introduced them as ‘Futurejacks’
Dogstar herself wore stripy neon socks pulled up to her knees and was
supporting blue hair, whether it was a wig or not was not that easy to
determine under her bright orange beany hat, or when she removed it! However
with blond hair Dogstar resembles Anneka Rice! Just to put you in the picture.

Two Pints (no wig in sight) on drums was simply engaging – the look
on her face distorted with every smash on the skins amid her large smile in
between sets, whilst Jonny just looked like a hospital porter who played bass, occasionally
grinning, but however, played it superbly! – Two Pints said to me after the gig
– “This is why I wear my shirt tucked in!” :D
It is very difficult trying to pin down a genre for ‘Futurejack’ they do not fall into a
typical slot. Their songs have a slight
edge of punk about them, but they are not all out punk, and from what I
experienced last night feel Dogstar Rose is the dynamic force behind the band.

Imagine Patti Smith on acid occasionally reaching notes that Nina
Hagen emits surrounded by infectious bass and an irrepressible drum beat, you
then have some idea of what Futurejack
is all about, and if you can’t then maybe it is a good idea you go check them
out “for training and quality purposes!”
Dogstar writes the songs and delivers them using strange facial
expressions that can only mean one thing – she thoroughly enjoys involving the
crowd and clearly becomes involved in her own antics on stage. Speaking to her
after the gig she said and I quote “There is only one reason I get on that
stage and that is to get rid of my demons!” The woman must be possessed!
The whole set was just really memorable. They had thought of
everything, stage gear, and unusual sounding tracks, delivered on a dynamic
scale.
Dogstar is the voice, the strings and comedienne of the band,
clearly knowing how to engage, not only herself, but the band in what was a
superb set, enjoyed by the crowd, judging by people’s faces all around me. Her
confidence knows no boundaries.
The track ‘Read my Lips’ was delivered in a catchy vein and provoked
some rude comments that circulated around the building. Which I will not get
dragged into but it was amusing.
‘Tick Tock’ produced some amazing screams and superb bass – played by
hospital porter Jonny! (He isn’t really a Hospital Porter, he just resembles
one!) Two Pints her face loaded full of concentration - either that or she was
being possessed by the solid rhythms or perhaps both, but one thing is for sure
she can play the drums - make no mistake! Even finishing off with a drum solo!
Amid the tongue in cheek flavor were some sombre moments as on ‘Thin
Disguise’ which had rather an eerie feel about it, but still gripping. Each
song was carried out with a fierce delivery and in between a small anecdote from
Dogstar which brought forth some comments from the audience – although nothing
I can print here!
Her first one was “Just tuning this baby, ahh my guitar tuner best Xmas
present ever, apart from my flute, nobody bought me underwear!” to hysterical
laughs from the mesmerised crowd at the Lomax.
Well never let it be said that Pagan don’t like ‘quirky’ Futurejacks are definitely that and
more!
Dogstar even quizzed me after the set saying “What’s the band’s
name?” and she was surprised when I said ‘Futurejack’
it turns out that another onlooker wasn’t
paying attention – But I passed with flying orange colours!
‘Read my Lips’ Futurejack
will be playing next at Jupiter’s Bar on the 29th January 2014. The future is bright - the future is orange!
