Risen Prophecy is a four piece power (thrash) metal band from Sunderland. Formed in 2005. They went on to record and release a two track EP featuring songs “Possession of the Weak” and Patriots or Prisoners” in 2007.
The CD Screaming for Death (released 2010) has been very professionally put together. The front cover depicts an evil mummified face, with the bands logo above it and on looking at alone deserves and indeed warrants the “listener” to do just that! The lyrics to all the eight tracks are featured on the inside cover, with a lot of band information portrayed inside it, along with a great pic of the band! After which, this sadly, for me is where the band takes me slightly off guard.
If this band had been “born” in the 80’s it would no doubt be hailed as a winner, but everything has moved up more than 100 notches since then leaving Risen Prophecy somewhat behind.
The shrill pitched vocals on the track “Persecutor” just don’t hit the same spot the instruments are hitting, and even more so on the third track “Damned Nation”
“Protect the Border” begins with some great thunderous beats, and above the shrill pitched screams bursts forth some amazing guitar, that turns into slightly early Maidenesque riffs and then the track quickens into a more up tempo intense beat laden track.
“Damned Nation” A very medieval style opening, with strumming guitar licks. Great blasting beats are quite intense, but the vocals sadly let this track down.
Forth track Risen Prophecy has a great bass line and some awesome drumming with interwoven guitar, but the harmonies sound somewhat jumbled. The shrill pitched screams of “Risen Prophecy” just tend to grate a little.
“Faith Stands Alone” starts off promising with some nice riffs, and chunky drum beats, with some funky bass lines thrown in. Good clean technical guitar gives it a great edge. Good track!
“Screaming for Death” The intro to this song is way too long, however when it does finally get going there is a welcome surprise, of some awesome riffs and the vocals here to be fair are really gritty and in keeping with the music, until sadly, once again the screams make your ears bleed, but for all the wrong reasons!
“Sins of the Fathers” Great opening track! Clean guitars it chugs into life with some good beats and a mean punchy bass line within. This track contains a lot of welcome surprises. There is some really beautiful guitar work going on here. Vocals actually compliment the music on this track (No shrill screams – bliss) my head is moving in appreciation. A very strange, but none the less “different” ending) Sound like a hoard of monks chanting) to what is easily the best track on the album!
“Within the Hands” Back to old school chugging and riffing. The song comes into its own, during the middle; really love the chorus to this track! Momentum sadly slows, but then bursts back into life. Can’t say this isn’t a diverse album at all, but the high pitched screams again just for me spoil it a little. The vocals on this track are not all bad, but the cheeky bass line, constant drum beat and awe inspiring guitar recover it nicely!
Risen Prophecy is perhaps a band to look out for in the future if this is what you are truly into! But they are offering what has already been done before, so I can appreciate that it will be difficult for the band to grab the attention of the listener, and maybe gain new fans however, “Live” this band may probably blow the roof off! But I am still undecided!
